USA lagging 10 to 20 years behind China in commercialization of battery technology: Report

According to a report, the USA is seriously behind in battery manufacturing & research compared to countries like China.

Reports state that Mark Warner, Senate Intelligence Committee Chair & Joe Manchin, Energy Committee Chair, have written a letter to the Energy Department making a strong case to boost battery manufacturing in the US to help keep up with the demand. In the letter, the two US Senators mention how the US is lagging "10 to 20 years behind Asia in commercialization of battery technology."

China currently dominates the EV battery supply, accounting for more than 75% of the total battery cell production. The country is also the world's top producer of Graphite, refining more than 90% of it into a material that is used in all EV battery anodes.

In comparison, the US produced less than 10% of the total lithium-ion batteries in 2022. The letter from the two senators also pushed towards the creation of next-gen battery tech that could potentially rely less on Chinese minerals.

Tesla is at the forefront of the industry in terms of Battery Management Systems. All the players can buy the batteries Tesla does but they can't seem to be able to eke out the same performance and range from them as Tesla does.

But yes, battery tech is an area where Chinese makers like BYD and CATL are at the forefront with the advent of LFP (lithium iron phosphate) batteries in China and the blade batteries by BYD. But the real area of advantage is not necessarily battery tech, but instead battery supply chains. None of these are exceptionally high-margin businesses which suggest tech is not an advantage, this tells me US and Canada together could also setup supply chains as they are in the process of doing with several Mega and Giga factory announcements by the old guard of VW and Ford and GM in partnership with Korean players.

Maybe this is why.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — As part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, a key pillar of Bidenomics, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced $7 billion to launch seven Regional Clean Hydrogen Hubs (H2Hubs) across the nation and accelerate the commercial-scale deployment of low-cost, clean hydrogen.
