Renault 5 EV comes with a massive battery charge indicator on the bonnet

Renault is gearing up to unveil the all-new 5 EV at the Geneva Motor Show next year. Ahead of its global unveil, the carmaker has revealed a number of teaser images of the upcoming EV.

The teaser images reveal a number of key features, including retro-styled headlights & tail lights, concealed rear door handles, short overhangs and a prominent roof spoiler. However, one of the most interesting features can be seen on the bonnet - a large "5" shaped display, meant to indicate the charge status of the car's battery.

The Renault 5 will be a city-oriented EV with a length of 3.92 metres. Initially, the EV will come with a standard 52 kWh battery offering a claimed range of 400 km on a single charge.

The Renault 5 is expected to be priced under the $30,000 price bracket and will be followed by the Renault 4 and Twingo in 2026.

Yeah, right. Introduce more parts that can break easily on the outside.

One strategically placed crow blessing is sufficient to send owners into panic.

But for me it looks like the battery indicator can be rotated or turned below where it is placed (up during charging to show the percentage of charging). I might be wrong as well. Your point holds good if they it not have this feature.

Well, the urge to be different is so persuasive that company's are going crazy. I would put this right next to the LCD/LED number plate, in terms of useless innovations killing the environment while adding little value!

Guys let's not go into hyper mode. This seems more like a concept display.

In the current form, I doubt this will pass the pedestrian protection regulations (Head-form impact). To meet the regulation it'll need a setup which can break very easily without leaving sharp fragments. OR flexible film type design will be adopted, which will have to pass the environmental validation (temp, water, scratch, impact etc.)

So, let's not boil our blood on this as of now. May be in future.

Yep. It feels more like they were trying to showcase the model name '5' and 'Battery' in a novel way.

Cause there is no % and also just 5 would be a weird number to show for battery charge. Also why would one want others to know the battery charge? Like shouting to a passerby that one has 5 litres of fuel left in the tank.

Re: Renault 5 EV comes with a massive battery charge indicator on the bonnet

The Renault 5 E-Tech as we see in patent images:

Quote:
From concept to series:

A few practical details appear. We can thus note:

the charging hatches on the two front wings (the production model will only have one on the right or left depending on the country of destination);
classic handles for the front doors and hidden in the jambs for the rear doors ;
a recess in the rear bumper allowing you to pass your hand to open the tailgate.

Based on the AmpR Small platform (ex-CMF-B EV), the Renault 5 E-Tech will be 3.92 m long and will be offered with a choice of two NMC batteries. One with 40 kWh will offer a WLTP range of 310 km; the other will develop 52 kWh to travel 400 km on a charge according to the WLTP homologation cycle. According to our information, the electric motor named ePT-100 kW will be offered with two power levels: 125 hp and 150 hp. The car will have V2G technology, which will allow it to feed electricity into a grid.

Pre-bookable for €150, the electric R5 will be officially presented to the public at the 2024 Geneva Motor Show, which will be held from February 26 to March 3. It will be produced in Douai and marketed in autumn 2024 to compete with the Citroën ë-C3 and Volkswagen ID.2. The R5 was then quickly followed by the Alpine A290, which was the sporty derivative.

Re: Renault 5 EV comes with a massive battery charge indicator on the bonnet

New 2024 Renault 5 arrives! Retro EV city car sets class standard with 249-mile range.

The reborn Renault 5 arrives to take on the MINI Cooper and Fiat 500 as the battle for all-electric city car supremacy heats up.

The production version sits on a fresh architecture called AmpR Small – developed by Renault Group’s Ampere EV division, and renamed from its original title, CMF-BEV. The platform has been conceived to support pure-electric vehicles, but to help cut almost a third from the development bill, engineers made heavy use of the front end of the petrol and hybrid-powered Clio and Captur.

With an overall length of just 3.92 metres, the 5 is compact. That makes it longer than conventional city cars such as the Hyundai i10 or Fiat’s 500, but shorter than pretty much any modern supermini. Renault says the 5 is nine centimetres shorter than a Clio overall, but that the wheelbase is only four centimetres shorter.

Customers in continental Europe will be able to buy the 5 with an entry-level 94bhp motor, but UK buyers are expected to be offered just the two more powerful options, with 121bhp/225Nm of torque and 148bhp/ 245Nm. We will get both battery options, though – 40kWh with the 121bhp motor, and 52kWh with the 148bhp unit. Renault UK plans to offer both set-ups across a wide variety of trim levels, allowing drivers to pick a better-specced version with the shorter-range battery, if it suits their lifestyle.

The 148bhp/52kWh combination will be the initial launch spec; the brand says that this set-up can take the 5, which weighs just under 1,500kg in big-battery form, from 0-62mph in less than eight seconds, and 50-75mph in less than seven seconds. The top speed is 93mph. Renault has yet to issue any official range figures, beyond saying that the small-battery edition could manage around 186 miles (300km) between charges if used in town, while the 52kWh version should be able to travel up to 249 miles (400km) between charges.

The smaller battery gets 80kW DC charging, while the larger pack can be refilled at up to 100kW, which means a 15-80 per cent top-up can be achieved in just under half an hour. A heat pump is likely to be standard on all UK versions, and the car and battery can be preconditioned via Renault’s smartphone app.

In addition, all UK models should feature 11kW AC bidirectional charging, allowing you to hook up to a three-phase AC wallbox (more common at commercial premises than at UK homes), power a device from the Renault (vehicle to load), or use the car to help manage power flow within the network by feeding electricity back to the wallbox (vehicle to grid) – a feature that some electricity suppliers offer discounts through.

The new 5 will be built in north-west France, as part of Renault’s ‘Electricite’ manufacturing base in the region. There’s no word yet on UK pricing, and while Renault says the car will cost from 25,000 Euros in France, that would be for a more basic model than those offered in the UK, and include the country’s substantial electric vehicle incentives.

Do watch this cool video (~ 15 mins) on Renault 5 by Top Gear; a little bit of nostalgia, and a little bit of fun. What a super cool French EV?

Looks like a nifty little city car! Unfortunately, it is probably not coming to India anytime soon. I hope it is a great success in Europe!

Do you mean to say that this will be launched in India? Is there a strong possibility? It will be great if Renault brings it to India as soon as they can.
