German automaker Volkswagen AG and Groupe Renault from France are reportedly in early discussions to collaborate on developing an affordable EV (electric vehicle) model.
The German newspaper Handelsblatt stated that Volkswagen is exploring partnerships on a platform for a car with a target price of under €20,000, which is anticipated to debut in 2026.

The landing of the Asian giant in Europe, at attractive prices and with a more than acceptable performance, has caught all the big players off guard here.

But perhaps a big part of the problem plaguing brands like Volkswagen, and many others, is how far away the arrival of cheap electric cars is envisaged. And in this context, we are talking about electrified vehicles under 20,000 euros.

Renault's CEO Luca de Meo confirms talks for an alliance with Volkswagen, the Germans want the platform of the new Renault 5 for the future ID.1.

Offering a zero-emission model like the Twingo, where the profit margin is lower and priced at less than €20,000 is an impossible dream if there is no extra player involved. Volkswagen has the same problem as the French with the future ID.1. The French and Germans have been in talks for a few months, de Meo said in a statement at the Geneva Motor Show, noting that "We are ready to cooperate in all segments.
