MG Motor India has announced that it plans to introduce two new models this year, including an EV.

Gaurav Gupta, Deputy Managing Director, MG Motor India, said, “We are bringing two new cars during the second half of this year and one of them is an EV for sure. We will keep adding new products to our portfolio next year also.”

MG currently offers a wide range of products in India. This includes the Astor, Hector, Hector Plus and Gloster. The carmaker also has the Comet EV and ZS EV on sale, which are said to account for 25-30% of the brand’s total sales in India.

MG expects the share of EVs to grow from 2% to about 4% this year. EV adoption is likely to accelerate from 2025 onwards, with the segment growing to about 6-7% next year.

It could be the MG4 or the Baojun Cloud EV or the Wep.

I think between the Mg4 and Cloud EV both near identical size, wheelbase. They may launch the Cloud EV its taller and slightly cheaper.

MG Motor India moots new sub-Rs 15 lakh EV MPV and SUV

MG’s new MPV for India to be based on Wuling Cloud
The new MG electric MPV is likely to hit the road within a year, and if all goes well, the model could be launched before the end of 2024, but not later than March 2025, added sources. This new MPV will be based on the Wuling Cloud EV, which is sold in Indonesia at the moment. It is around 4.3 metres long and has a wheelbase of 2,700mm, which is slightly shorter than the Maruti Ertiga (2,740mm) and a tad more than the Renault Triber (2,636mm). Apart from catering to family buyers, the three-row EV will be aimed at the fleet segment too, which also enjoys the FAME benefit from the Government of India.

Quote:
Having started with the ZS EV, and followed it by the entry-level Comet, MG wants the new MPV and SUV to bridge critical gaps in its portfolio and expand the addressable customer base of around Rs 15 lakh, which is becoming a nice sweet spot for upgraders in the market.

The all-new EV based on the same vehicle architecture is likely to follow within three to six months in the personal buyer’s space. This SUV will be a five-door rugged vehicle on the lines of the Maruti Jimny and will be based on the Baojun Yep Plus SUV, as reported by us earlier.

MG Motor today has a market share of about 1 percent in a highly competitive Indian market with 5 models in its portfolio. It sells approximately 5,000 units per month, with EVs accounting for 10-20 percent of its total sales, depending on the month.

I’m absolutely disappointed that it’s the cloud EV and not the MG4. Guess I just have to hold on to my Tiago.EV for much longer

MG4's ground clearance is very low(150mm unladen) and also hatchbacks don't sell easily in India.

Will people in India buy a car whose interiors are of inferior quality & also that doesn't have panoramic sunroof if it is just priced 1-2 lakhs cheaper than ZS EV?

Recent price cuts of zs ev also suggest that MG is not going to introduce an ev below zs in the near term.

But atleast MG should bring long range version of ZS EV

MG is not going to be getting MG4. Not many will be willing to pay that much for a hatchback, even though it is more spacious then a MG ZS.

Not sure how many prefer panaramic sunroof, with temperatures so high and with cities filled with smoke and dust, not many will even open it.

For EVs, the fact that BYD sells or includes a matching roof liner accessory as a standard kit to cover the panaramic sunroof means, not many are a fan of them. In a hot country panoramic sunroof means less range.

It’s really sad that Nepal and Pakistan get the MG4 and we don’t. Are we that immature of a car market. I really hope not. The car should be bought for its merits and the MG4 is a very superior and award winning product wherever it has been launched so far. Too bad MG India thinks we are not a mature enough market for it.

It's not merely a matter of a company perceiving our market as immature; the issue primarily lies with taxation. Take Nepal's MG4 and Pakistan's for example—both are completely built units (CBUs). Why? Because in Nepal, all cars are CBUs; there's no indigenous manufacturing. Consequently, everyone faces equal taxation burdens.

Should MG introduce the CBU 4 here, it would instantly face pricing challenges, rendering it uncompetitive from the outset.
Result? You have to damn sure that the product is going to be give you volume before you make a business case for setting up a CKD assembly line here.

JSW MG Motor JV to introduce its first PHEV in India next year. (CY 2025)

Quote:
We will bring the first PHEV in the calendar year 2025. This will be a mass market car.

This new technology of PHEV is something that we are really banking on because we feel that the charging infrastructure in our country is going to take some time to develop and this is the perfect transition product for our country
