Ford India expanding its EV software development business

Ford announced its exit from the Indian market in 2021. While manufacturing operations have ceased, the company’s software development arm is on an expansion spree.

Ford Business Solutions currently employs 12,000 people at its Chennai facility and plans to hire another 3,000 employees in the next 2-3 years. The team will develop applications for Ford’s global EV platforms.

Mike Amend, Chief Enterprise Tech Officer at Ford Motor Company, said, “We’re building and designing new manufacturing lines for electric vehicles in Chennai which will use VR/AR to model and simulate assembly line flow, and this is being done for our new EV platform manufacturing.”

“We are investing in EV-related capabilities, artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions, customer relationship management, digital commerce, data analytics, cyber security solutions and general software development,” Amend added.

Ford has invested around $250 million in its Chennai centre in the last 5 years. Amend said that the company will continue to invest in cloud engineering, software reliability engineering, development engineering and building advanced platform capabilities in Chennai.

Ford is also working on a cloud-based commerce platform which will enable customers to interact with dealers for parts, accessories, merchandise, etc.

Re: Ford India expanding its EV software development business

Ever since the rumours of Ford’s comeback were doing rounds a few months back, I felt things weren’t adding up. It isn’t financially viable for a brand to make a comeback having exited just three years ago. Some said that there is no smoke without fire, and they aren’t wrong, just that the fire is different from what everyone was expecting.

I was secretly hoping that they do come back and I am disappointed. In fact, I still have an iota of belief, but it is what it is. I think it is important to take every rumour with a pinch of salt in our industry unless there is strong backing. However, I’d LOVE to be proven wrong.

I’ve said this before, but I would like to reiterate what MJ said:
“Expect disappointment and you won’t be disappointed”.

This is good news for people in IT industry, especially in AI/ML field. There is going to be lot of new opportunities in Chennai. We don't have to look at Bangalore every time. Hope many more MNC's set GCC here at Chennai, considering Bangalore is already suffocating with over population & water scarcity.
