How much time it takes to top up charge your ZS EV for say 50%? (If you can provide both DC Fast Charging and Slow Charging Time)
Considering 240 KMs in a Windsor, how would you plan a 540 KMs drive from Mumbai to Ahemdabad? Just a sample case to understand from an existing MG EV owner. |
On a 60 kW DC charger, 20%-70% is 25 kWh, this should take around 30 mins. If you use an 150 kW charger like the one present at Haloli on the way to Surat, it will shrink to 25 mins. Best use of time is by coupling it with a meal.
Sweet spot for long drives on ZS EV is 400-450 KMs per day possible with one charging stop, your drive of 540 KMs will require two charging sessions. One stop at around Navsari which is around 250 KMs away from Mumbai and another at Vadodara. First session may take up to 40 mins, second one around 25 minutes provided you stop at a 60 kW charger.
Slow charging time varies, if you use the 7 kW AC charger which is bundled by MG on higher variants, you will add 13% per hour which takes around 4 hours for 50%. If your home doesn't have sufficient load then you can ask for the charger to be derated to 3 kW which will add 6% per hour which translates to 8 hours for 50%.
The MG portable charger charges at 2 kW for safety reasons, this adds 4% per hour which translates to 12 hours for 50%.
Personally I find the 7 kW AC charger overkill for personal usage, very few homes have the spare load to accommodate it.
I have been using the portable charger for close to 2 years now and it fits my needs. Have plenty of DC chargers close by for quick top ups if required. Have had to do it only once.

Few things:
1. Why is charging cost Rs 10 per kWh? It's like assuming an ICE owner always uses 95 Octane or 100 Octane fuel. Marginal cost per kWh in cities like Bangalore is Rs 6. Taking an average of Rs 8 is fair. I understand community charging or DC charging with GST maybe more expensive but those are situation to situation specific scenarios. Base assumption needs to be that a buyer has basic EV charging facility at his/her parking.
2. As another person has pointed, there is a huge difference in car behaviour below 20% between Tata EVs and rest of the industry. Apart from the car going into limp mode, non-working AC etc, risk of sudden range drop is non-zero.
3. I understand wanting to plan in such a way that you don't go below 20% on highways but why start with 80%? Starting with 100% when you need it is one of the biggest advantages with an EV. I understand that on DC chargers you would want to stop charging at 80% but that's for the second leg of the trip.
Based on my experience with the ZS EV, the Windsor should be able to do 240 KMs on highways if driven normally. Assume you will need a DC top up once in every 200 KMs.
I actually make the same assumption on the ZS EV because I drive the car in a pretty spirited way, it's pretty easy to cover around 350-400 KMs with one charge at times comparable to ICE. |
Hi, Rs.10/- per kWh is roundoff assumption to average out lower or higher slabs eg may be in Mumbai users pay Rs.12 to 15 per kWh and in Delhi users pay Rs. 6 to 7 per kWh. I have assumed user in big cities only. That sheet is just an illustration.
First highway drive is always from 100%. However, if someone is to drive 600km (for example only), she/he will have to, in most cases, maintain cycle of 80% to 20%, therefore I have tried to keep realistic figures. People can charge it to 20% to 100% if they have 1 hr or more time to charge (during their breakfast, lunch or snacks break). As per my reading, it generally take about 5 to 10 minutes to start charging in the public charging on a highway.
Windsor is likely to be 100 to 150 kgs heavier than Nexon EV LR. Even with better shape, BEV platform and better battery chemistry, it will surely give atleast 30km to 40km less overall range than Nexon EV LR (with its 38kW battery which is lower than Nexon EV LR)
I may be wrong, but I strongly believe that 99.99% times user will never go below 10% battery so I never thought about it while making assumptions.

The kerb weight of Cloud EV (38kWh) is 1495kg and that of Nexon EV is 1531 Kg. So Nexon is heavier.
As of September 2024, the Windsor has not been crash tested, and for me it's simply not logical to pay 16 big ones for a Chinese product. I'd rather happily buy the Curvv or the Nexon or the Punch which have a 5 star rating.

Ya Mumbai electricity prices do seem to be on the higher side.
It's a lot more nuanced on the charging stuff. Takeaway from your sheet seems to be that you will need to charge once every 130 KMs which is definitely not required. The buffer you maintain depends on how reliable the charging infra is.
For example, if you are heading home, you know that you will be able to charge at ease with no worries about power cuts or other cars occupying the charger. In this case, you can safely go below 20% because it represents roughly 50 KMs of driving distance or 5+ hours of being stuck in traffic with AC running whereas if your next charging session is on a DC charger, it is prudent to ensure that you have enough buffer to reach a backup DC charger.
Also on public DC charging, major providers like Jio BP, Chargezone and Zeon have launched Autocharge. This means no more fiddling with an app or RFID, simply plug in your car and it starts charging provided you have enough balance. Usually takes 30 seconds to 1 minute. Highly recommended to spend sometime setting this up, avoids wasting time at the charging station or dealing with connectivity issues with mobile.

looking at the top-spec just because I think 1L is not much difference (hopefully also including the price of the 7kw charger) |
The top spec essence variant includes 7.4kW charger according to their online brochure. Lower variants get 3.3kW and can be upgraded to 7.4 during purchase.
When is the review of the MG Windsor dropping on Team - BHP ? Or have I missed it ?

Just the changes to the heading of this discussing thread is making me go bonkers.
1) MG launches Cloud EV
2) MG Offers BAAS as a service
3) More on BAAS as service by MG
4) MG confused everyone with BAAS as a service
5) More on Windsor EV
6) BAAS as a service brilliant
Looks like it is heading the way MG wants (Get the wind?) |
This thread/topic has made it to the tbhp hot thread section so many times in so many variants that it will soon compete with Nexon rl:
Right now it is
N) Pros and Cons of the MG Windsor EV. :D
