Biggest advantage is in the case of accidents involving head on collision. The seat back protects one from being thrown forward and as such, there is no need for airbag and even a seat belt, though it is always safer to be secured with a belt. Rear facing seats in airplanes have been shown to be the safest seats. I am a Surgeon who has had to deal with injuries following major accidents.

Tesla's have the option but how woul the passengers feel if someone is tailgating close or flashing light or honking?

Few questions that comes to my mind

• How will the cars perform in crash test ratings?
• Will the current seatbelt design be effective with this new seating configuration?
• Will the door design remain the same, or will it require modifications?

Comfort related issue

• Interaction with passengers in the front seats may be limited
• May not have the same legroom
• Ingress Egress could be more challenging

Having traveled in Mercedes Vito/V class vans with such configuration, I absolutely hate the idea for below reasons

1. Hate facing the opposite direction of travel.
2. If in a cab (office cab, airport shuttle etc), having to face a stranger the whole time of traffic is unthinkable for the introvert in me.

But I would l love to have such a car for a long road trip with a bunch of friends (as long I don’t have to sit in the rear facing seat)

In my person opinion, it works in commercial cars and on chauffeur driven cars.
On self driven cars, the back facing passengers would've really hard time communicating with the front row passenger and the driver.
