Basically an improved / longer distance version of inductive charging. However, i doubt this is going to feature on the Reva as part of their "Instant Remote Charging".

Instant remote charging is definitely not involving inductive charging - inductive is slow and needs a contact of the magnet with the battery circuit. Check out the Palm Pre and Touchstone to see what inductive charging is all about and how its being used to charge the phone (and its an awesome phone!!!).
I think the charge via sms might be a way to redirect the circuit to a one-time-use "reserve" system that would need to be replenished at a dealer every time this system is used.

True, but if you watch the video in the link 2 posts earlier, it is about
resonant energy transfer.
The major difference being - it can span longer distances, and there is less "wasted energy".

Indeed another possibility, but...
Question: What kind of energy device would need to be used so rarely and selectively? (its not even a flip switch, you have to SMS reva!!)
Possible Ans: Something that would be a few-time use, fairly expensive, or be damaging to the equipment if used regularly...
OR
With little
technical reason to include it as a seperate reserve, there are a few strategic reasons they could use a small extra battery as a "additional, on-demand, special recharge".
Eg. "165km range"
vs "150km range + special 'Remote Recharge'!! (tm)"
Thats a big win for the marketing department -- see how its already created a buzz on this thread! ;)
Though i still think the most likely thing is allowing more of a deep-cycle of the Li-ions.

PS - Also, another thing that hasn't been mentioned is what happens after you send that SMS? Do they automatically activate this "magic charge" or do you get some sort of code that you have to enter to enable it (simpler + cheaper for reva).
Maybe the car only allows X number of "remote charges" - kinda similar to the M3's launch control feature which you can only use X number of times in the car's life.
Saw on yahoo.com that the Reva NXR intercity will cost about Rs. 10.65 lacs without batteries and Reva NXR city will cost about Rs. 7.1 lacs with lead acid battries.

That's a very very steep price for this car.Though they are environmental friendly but you can't price this high.

At a recent conference I had the chance to interact with the people at Reva. It comes across that they are taking it slow and not wanting to scale-up even though they did get some financing. They sell ~600 cars per annum and rather than scaling it up substantially, they are more looking at skimming the market (whatever it is for electric cars).

Northern Lights Energy a leading environment solutions company based in Iceland is tying up with Reva to develop electric cars for the Iceland Market. Here is more info from their press release.

The company recently announced a joint venture with General Motors India to provide the electric powertrain and energy management systems for the new Chevrolet Spark and a new 30,000 unit REVA assembly plant – expected to be one of the greenest in the world – is under construction in India. Iceland is also being considered by REVA as a possible site for a European assembly plant. The REVA NXR is a four-seat, three-door hatchback family car suitable for urban driving. Top speed is 104 kph with a range of 160 kms per charge. If using the 90 minute fast charge (normal charging is eight hours), the REVA NXR offers an effective range of 320km a day. A fast charge for 15 minutes will provide a 40 km range.
NLE is working on developing a (re)charging infrastructure system for Electric Vehicles and vehicle exchange service to support the adoption of electric vehicles in Iceland. “Iceland is an island and with its advanced electric grid technology using 100% renewable energy in electricity production is a perfect location for zero emission electric vehicles” says Gisli Gislason, the Chairman of NLE. In addition to importing new EV models to Iceland, NLE is also working on developing systems to convert the current internal combustion engine (ICE) car fleet into Electric Cars. “We are working with a number of parties in Denmark and Finland to enable the conversion process of the current cars running in Iceland to support a swift development of the Electric Vehicle market. The mission is to place Iceland in the forefront of countries that uses sustainable energy sources for it’s personal vehicle fleet, moving away from fossil fuels, saving billions of ISKs for the society and reducing the 680.000 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) that is annually being emitted by the personal vehicle fleet in Iceland. This is what the Project 2012 is all about.” says Sighvatur Lárusson, the Chief Operating Officer of NLE. “
“We are very excited about the partnership with NLE. The 2012 project is one of the most ambitious yet achievable transport electrification projects in the world today and we are pleased to be able to contribute our technologies and products” said Keith Johnston, President, European Operations at REVA.
The signing will take place at the Indian Embassy, Skulagata 17, Reykjavik, Iceland at 12:00 midday on November 12th 2009.

Looks like perseverance on Reva's part is finally paying off.
Alas, we can only hear about other countries. When will we see some encouraging news on pricing in our country?
The govt. should remove excise totally on 100% electric cars like the reva in India.
Oh! for some sane decisions by the govt.
Maybe TBHP could make a representation to Govt. on behalf of car lovers in India. :)

oh how i wish this comes true, but do you think that our govt. would want to do that, i dont think so.
I will definitely go for the NXG cause it will be different from the common looking hatchbacks and also at least I will be saving the nature by using that instead of an suv:thumbs up...Only I wish the price would come down at least to 4-5 if not more.please:
The price is way high, but the car is very high tech and it looks UNLIKE anything on the road, very unconventional.
The car will be displayed at 2010 auto expo and bookings will start soon there after.
just as our govt commented that F1 is not a sport, it might comment that Reva is not a car as it runs on batteries and not petrol/diesel - so no duties (I know I'm kidding)!! Anything is possible in India.
