hi guys,
we have one of the rarest breeds of dog, it is known as kanni.

The Kanni, which means maiden, is an indigenous south indian dog breed found in the state of Tamil Nadu. The breed is a further extension of the Caravan or Mudhol Hound and is also a descendant of the Saluki.

In general appearance, the Kanni is similar to a smooth-coated Saluki or a Doberman Pinscher with natural ears and tail. The dog is usually black and tan in colour, perhaps with limited white on the feet and chest. There also exists a cream-coloured variety of the breed, which is known as Palakanni. The Kanni is agile, slim, graceful, and moderately built, with a deep chest and slim body. The dog stands about 25 inches at the withers, the bitch about 22 inches.

It is used mainly for Hunting. The Kanni was often given away as part of a bride's dowry. The breed is now extremely rare, and on the verge of extinction. Efforts to revive the breed have not been taken up as specimens are few and there exists little information about them.

The Kanni is a rare variety of dog found in South India, in and around Tirunelveli, Kovilpatti, Kazhugumalai, Kileral, Kodangipatti, SIvakasi and Madurai. It is said that the name Kanni ( which means unmarried girl) comes from the fact that the dog used to be given as a gift to the bridegroom just before the marriage. Infact, it was in the list of dowry items offered to the groom.
They are usually of four colours, brown, cream, black & tan and brindle.
The Kanni is kept by families who do not sell them but may gift them if a promise is made to look after them well . They are not allowed to roam on the streets and brought up as pet animals. They are given a diet of milk in the morning, corn porridge in the afternoon and a "Ragi" porridge in the evening. Meat is given once a week or once a month only.
They are used mainly for hunting.

Guys, Im looking for a male country dog (or a cross breed) in Chennai for gaurding my home.

We had a dobermann before but it died :-(, we want a dog that's easy to maintain. Even if it is 6-10 months old, its ok. Pls let me know if you or your friends have any such healthy dog which they would like to give\sell.

Kanni means virgin, need not necessarily be unmarried. or vice versa

jk - you've changed a lot since you left BLR. I didnt realize you chopped your tail off after returning to Kerala.

Ok guys. Here is my cute Boxer his name is SADDAM. He has won couple of awards also in dog shows from lions club. He has been trained from a Army dog keeper. He is 5 year old now very disciplined and holds nice attitude. I have his video also in case if some one wanna see it pm me.

If only one of you guys had come forward before june 2007, i had a wonderful, very ferocious cross breed, brought down from ooty whom i just could not handle (Believe me, i can handle), with my kids & in a flat & i had to give him away to a perfect stranger. I have had dogs all my life, but he (i called him goofy) was the most ferocious dog i have ever seen. My kids have bite marks to prove that. we still loved him.
