We always kept Rottweilers. The Marshall Sr. was 8 yrs old when he left us due to some serious health conditions. We imported him from Germany and he was a very very big guy. I will post pictures of Marshall Sr. sometime soon.

In the last pic the neck looks huge. Awesome Rottie. Waiting for my rottie to grow up and put on some more weight.

Lovely dane. May I know how much did you buy it for?

in my book this also is not ok
imagine what could happen if an evil person were to poison the poor dogs? Dogs need access to fresh water at all times too, or else they thirst and over time, suffer with kidney problems and so on.
dogs also require company - they are pack animals in that sense and they need their own kind as well as human companionship.
I stand firm that if one doesnt have help at home and/ or a family member (s) who are at home - in effect someone there at all times, then one simply should not keep a dog.
Whether watchdog or pet dog or whatever, this applies in my book.
Im not intending to start an argument with you but personally I would never endorse the point of view you have raised.

shed some light on watch dogs and their purpose then??
i remember our Doberman used to be left alone to take care of the house (inside the compound but not indoors) with a person who used to feed her 3 times a day while we were out of the country for a week or so.
this was close to 1990's and at that time dog hotels were unknown off.

Dogs like humans are also evolving and they learn to adapt.
But i seriously hate the idea of locking a dog inside a room/house for the whole day without any interaction.

I suggest you dont get a pup in the first place until you have the necessary infrastructure in place to look after him/her while you are not there. Your own home is best because dogs are fiercely territorial animals.

Remember they have every right to live a happy, healthy life with a lot of affection given to them, just like humans/ children etc.

Before you think of yourself and your own love for animals, just take a moment to think it through objectively and un-selfishly from the dog's perspective and then ask yourself if it is fair or not to get a puppy and then leave him somewhere else through the day, every day when you are not there.

I'd say that a dog can be left at home all day, but one has to train the dog to be used to it. One can suffer a lot too, in the process. Years back, friends of mine lost a lot of furniture in the process of getting their dog trained to be alone in the house; a puppy can be incredibly destructive.

I think it is something that needs to be done gradually, though: no good getting a young dog if the whole family needs to go to work the next day!

The dog's basic comfort: shelter (if kept out), sufficient freedom, water, temperature, toys, of course, are primary concerns.

It's an advantage of cats: the relative independence. Once out of the house, they, pretty much, just revert to wild animal! The other side of this coin is that they are subject to considerably more danger, and I am still grieving for the loss of one of my cats at less than two years old.

Cats are great to be left alone! Sometimes, they just love it that way. I leave my princess at home every day from about 10 am until about 7 or 8 in the evening. Pretty sure she just sleeps the entire day off or goes around chasing bugs.

When am back, she clambers onto me for a quick snooze and we play around as well.

But given a choice, I would like her to have human company at home.

I forgot to say... A dog that is unhappy being alone, will express its unhappiness, whining, crying and barking.

People who leave a dog like this, not only do not deserve dogs: they do not deserve neighbours!
