Feel sorry about both the incidents, but can't help smiling at the ironic description. :)

Both you guys ought to watch the movie "Hachiko - A Dog's Story".

Hehehe... I have been in the thick of many a fight when I had my dog. Just like yours, my doggie was a vicious li'l thing and would pick up fights with just about anybody. And the fact that he was pure Pom and barely 1 ft high did not help the situation at all.

There were several situations when even wild dogs (sometimes upto a dozen) on the hills, where I used to go with him for running, after seeing his size, tried to carry him away as their supper. This was always when he was lagging behind me a sizeable distance. But he would put up a brilliant and very vicious fight until I could fly to the spot. There were a couple of occasions when big locks of his fur were actually pulled out by the dogs trying to carry him off. But he invariable managed to keep them occupied until I could reach him. Else it would have been bye-bye for good, as they planned to carry him off to places where I could not possibly have followed. Nor can one match their speed.

These kind of things happened so often, that I had become a veteran at fighting off all kinds of dogs. But I have noticed, in the long period that I had my doggie, that it almost never happened that any dog would directly engage me in a skirmish, once I'm at the spot. Wild and stray dogs absolutely never. Couple of times big pet dogs did; and I had no choice but to send them flying... something I'v always felt not so good about, when I think about it. :( But at that time the only thing on my mind was to protect my soulmate at any cost.

Thanks for all the good advise you are imparting here. About tick treatment - Is any anti tick treatments like Frontline plus available? I am not sure about the ingredients, but we hardly see our dog scratch itself. We apply this about once in three months. It takes just a few seconds to put this near his collar, and supposedly all ticks are gone within 12 hours.

I use a similar product ("Advantage") on my cat, but, after a year of the local petshop trying to get it for me, I had someone bring it from USA. It is enormously expensive, but very effective. They say to use monthly. In UK I used only two or three times a year; here, first application, and we have gone past two months with no sign of a flea or a tick --- despite her having a boyfriend who loks as if he has loads. If I could hold him without risking injury, I'd treat him too!

Just a warning note: whilst the products are similar, they are not the same: the one-spot flea treatment for dogs is lethally poisonous to cats

Any rotweiller owners here?I'm getting a rotweiller pup in 40 days time.I want to know what to feed it.the person i am getting it from is not a breeder but does this out of his affection for dogs and has owned 3 champion Rotweillers.Now he suggests giving them Royal canin.Where as on various websites i have read its best to give them home cooked meal with chicken,oats,garlic cloves,olive oil etc.
What is your take on it.any specialists here on dog care.

Ahhh, all these doggie stories and the pics. Brings a tear to my eye. Brings back memories of good ole Bruce. My faithful companion, my pet doggie, a mixed breed, who died tragically way too young in West Africa due to negligence of the vet. The emotions are just as intense as losing a member of the family I was wiped out. Incidentally, all dogs in our family have been named Bruce for the past 100 years, irrespective of gender and other considerations. RIP, Boochie, and may you continue to rock and roll in the big doggy playground up in the sky. Sob.

Today, I had to take the pup over to CUPA and give it away. Man! I just couldn’t believe I could get this close to someone in such a short period. Had picked it off the street on the 21st of Feb, and today on the 21st of Mar I left it with CUPA.

And today I know what that ‘lump in ones throat’ means. I had planned to ask a lot of things at CUPA, to the attendants, to the people operating CUPA, but after handing him/her (haven’t figured that out yet) over, all I did was nod my head and try my best to swallow that ‘lump’.

From being this small and wobbly….


… to being this big and sure footed.


... a small stint, but one that I will cherish always.

One good sleeper, sound deep sleep during most of the day.

For waking us all up twice every night for over a week, for vandalizing my mom’s flower pots, for scaring away the squirrels that we feed, for nibbling at our feet when we get home, for having done potty all over the place…. It was one heck of a company. Something that I am going to miss, every day for the next few days atleast.



CUPA facility is nothing spectacular, but for what they are doing, that is a lot. Had seen 3-4 dogs in cast and bandages, they take good care of dogs with the resource available at hand. One can also volunteer to take the dogs out for a walk, pet them and give them company. There were a whole lot of them lying all around the area.

CUPA needs / uses up a whole lot of paper, cloth every day. So in case one has some waste paper, news paper, old cloth, one could drop it off at their center. Did drop off what ever I had at home.

I sincerely hope that it finds a good home. Some one good adopts it and it has all the place to run around and play. It is now in the right age, age where thy play a lot, like being pampered. The right time to be adopted.

I need Your help.
Wifey and I decided to bring a dog home and have him/her as part of our family. Since we both are working full-time, we intend to have the pet raised at my in-laws home with week-ends spent at ours. My aunt has a long history of raising dogs (none currently though) and she would love the idea of having one at her home.

The following are the confusion:
a) Not sure if its a good idea to raise at my aunts place (~10 kms from ours) with week-end visits to my home. We plan to have him/her in our home full-time in the next 4-6 months.
b) My wifey isnt interested in mongrels (even when i am) and Indian breed. Do all the foreign breeds require the same treatment? (grooming etc)
c) We arent particular about the type of breed (scent, retriever etc), only that the he/she shouldnt be lazy and not over-aggressive.
d) Not sure if we want a he/she (what difference does it make apart from expanding the family tree)
e) My wifey detests seeing puppies damage the flower plants we have.

I told my wifey about adopting one rescued, but she doesnt seem to catch it very well. (negotiation in progress)

Would appreciate Your thoughts.

1. I think you're better off with a starter dog = a Lab. Very friendly breed, is not an Indian mongrel, and is certainly not lazy (which again depends on how active your own lifestyle is).
2. I think the initial months with the pup are the best because...thats when they're a pup! Look at it this way - would you have your kid reared by an aunt for the first 5 months and see him/her on week-ends and then expect to cuddle up every day after?

We are just animals with a sixth sense (or whatever that means). Emotions run the same for ALL of us. Pets are NOT ornamental. The way your wife sees it, its beginning to feel that way.

if she's not comfortable with a dog (any dog) drop the idea. Its like having a child. Would you give away the child AFTER you've realised you're not on for the responsibility? :) Or would you figure these things ahead? I think you're doing the right thing by figuring it ahead.

a) Not a good idea. The beginning months are essential for the dog to live with the owner so that they can gel properly. If he/she stays with an aunt, then he/she might want to stay there itself and won't like the change to your place since it will be accustomed to the earlier surroundings.
b) Each breed is different. Some have less hairfall, some have more. Some foreign breeds need special care if brought home, like a dalmatian would need A/C 24*7
c) I suggest you go for a lab. As much as possible, take the 1st pup that was born. Labs are friendly. I guess my lab is over-friendly :D Labs are pure gluttons though :D
d) Same as above. Try to pick the 1st one that is born. During periods, a female dog will paint your floors red. Male dogs can get aggressive if not mated and might start leg-humping.
e) Damages during toothing period is inevitable. My dog chewed on my sofas and what not.

My wifey doesnt see having the pet as ornamental and infact had nurtured them since her childhood. The only thing she (and my aunt) hate is the ruckus the dogs make to the flower pots. I guess I can place the pots out-of-reach for the pet, which my aunt cant do with the mini-nursery she grows (some justice hehe).

Being full-time employees, is the only reason for wanting to raise at aunts place and bring down on week-ends. I understand the point though, leaves me thinking if we should ever have one at the moment. And I was also inclined to invite a Lab home, atleast I scored right on that :)

I shall keep You guys posted, if and when we decide to bring one home.

So no rotweiller owners here?

btw, I havent been able to get over my Dobe, and your post brought back a lot of memories.
