BSNL Usage Miscalculation?

For those who don't know, BSNL offers BB Plans where between 2AM and 8AM, downloads aren't counted and the speeds are 2Mbps. So usage between 2:00:00 and 8:00:00 is free.

Check the highlighted usage. Data counted 7780kb nearly =7.7MB for the duration of 3 seconds.
BSNL knows it gives a 2 Mega"bits" connection and not a 2 Mega"bytes" connection I hope. How in the world even with highest speed(considering both 256kBps download and 64kBps upload speed) can I download+Upload 7MB in 3 seconds? I'm not cribbing that they're eating up my free usage, but this must be happening to everyone even in normal browsing which isn't fair! Also, many-a-time uTorrent reports only 3.8GB of download and see what BSNL records it as 4567600kb=4.3GB! Why this discrepancy?

Re: BSNL Usage Miscalculation?

one reason could be that its not realtime monitoring. Probably data is billed few minutes or seconds after consumption. However, that should not be a valid reason to overcharge!!!

Did you consider your uploaded bandwidth? utorrent separates uploaded bandwidth from downloaded. But its all the same for BSNL.

Edit: just realised that you are talking about download only bandwidth.. then, another reason could be redundant or bad data. I am not sure if utorrent lists wasted data too in total downloaded data (it does list it separately somewhere).

Re: BSNL Usage Miscalculation?

But isn't 500MB of Bad Data a little far fetched?

Must be HSPDA at work (the figure of 7 rings a bell here). I can think of no reason.

Re: BSNL Usage Miscalculation?

Between 2AM and 8AM, downloads aren't counted and the speeds are 2Mbps upto a fair usage policy of 10 Gb per month.
Also if the time of initiation or termination falls outside the period, the whole duration is billed. ie. if started at 0100.59 or if terminated at 0800.01, the whole duration of active connection will be charged.
To be safe, start at 0230 and stop at 0730.

This is not correct. This used to be the case long ago, when people used to have scripts scheduled to run at 2AM to restart the modem, so that a fresh session is started after 2AM!
Later, BSNL modified the billing process to consider this. (Atleast 3 years ago as I know)
I have been using this plan for a long time now and this is no more an issue.
It does properly consider the 2AM - 8AM window.

Re: BSNL Usage Miscalculation?

I prefer the package with unlimited download 24x7. Currently using beam cable which gives 10 mbps unlimited speed @ 1000Rs, a true broadband experience.

Unfortunately, none of the service providers offer this because of the fair usage policy.
You get unlimited 24x7, but the speed reduces after a certain download limit.

Exactly! And either way, if that had to be the case, I'd have charged around 5GB! Not 7MB.

Even if the fair usage has been crossed, the reduced speed is good enough. Atleast we wouldn't be charged extra after that. In my plan the speed is 10 mbps till 30GB, after that it's 2mbps, which is still a good speed IMO.

Thats a fantasic plan for the price you are paying
Any idea if that service provider's presence in bangalore?
Haven't seen such plan with such pricing with the usual ISPs.

Re: BSNL Usage Miscalculation?

Yes speed is so good that I share it on both of my laptops and still don't compromise the browsing experience. Unfortunately, they are operating only in Hyderabad at present. I think their next plan is to operate in Chennai.

Re: BSNL Usage Miscalculation?

Wow, that is one heck of a plan. A full 700MB movie in 10 minutes flat! What're the uploading speeds?

And yeah, any guesses for BSNL's faulty calculations?
