Thank you Smokie, I'm considering 18-200 and 75-300 as mentioned am just a beginner and would like to take some good photos.

When i saw the OM-D in the photo expo in bangalore in indoor light i was sold on EVF ,it was that good.The EVF in the OM-D is indeed similar in resolution but the OM-D EVF is visibly crisper, it uses a LCD EVF where as the one in A57/A37 and panasonic GH series uses a LCoS display but they both are inferior to the OLED evfs found in A77/NEX6/7 and new Fuji mirrorless ,GH3 camera.

The NEX5N sensor as per DXO has a 30% better ISO score then the OM-D,so theoretically the NEX5n should show lesser noise.So it could be that Olympus is applying some clever NR to live view.Since i too didn't notice any noise in the OM-D.

But i certainly see noise in my A57 at low light.But after a while of using EVF i started to ignore the noise.

Lol, i know that the EVF vs OVF battle like lcd vs plasma will always continue but as far as i can remember there was no previous debate on EVF here in teambhp.

instead of the 75-300 pick up the 70-300.

Since you know that, in case you haven't noticed most of such threads are about people asking doubts and getting solutions from others. Seldom a debate - which is not a constructive objective, one must say. Debate causes unnecessary polarization and digression - which is what I was referring as "trying to fit a square peg in a round hole".

If one needs to start a debate, it should be in a separate thread, what do you say? At least simple-minded solution seekers will know then that they will not get anything there that will practically solve their problem. ;)

Defishing the fish-eye lens kills the purpose of spending big money on specialized lens. Significant areas are cropped in de-fishing and you wont get the 8mm Field of view.

For UWA Sigma 10-20 is a good choice too , Problem with Sigma 8-16 is that it has protruding front element so you can not use any filters.

Filters like 10 Stop ND for long exposure , ND8 , Cokin color filter makes a lot of sense on ultra wide angle lenses. Also CP-L is useful for blue sky people state problem of banding but If sun is towards your shoulder it is minimal.

But yes there is nothing wider then 8-16 but distortion is really difficult to control as you go wider , So buy a double axis spirit level as well if you are going for 8-16

Let me assure you that this recent set of posts/discussion on OVF/EVF is not the 1st on TBHP nor will it be the last.

That's Jupiter and the "?" like constellation below it is the Pleiades also known as '7 Sisters' or Krittika nakshatra in India. How long was this exposure? There is some streaking probably due to that.

Did you use a tripod?

I can somewhat relate to what aim120 is trying to say with respect to EVF and OVF. For somebody already coming from an OVF background the EVF might not be big deal (or good enough) but for a newcomer it is entirely different matter. I realized it when I picked up the A57 at a Sony store and looked thru it! It is so so much better viewing experience than the dim mirrors of the likes of D5100 or the Canon 1100/550 etc. Added to that you can see how the exposure changes when you play with any of the settings and it feels just awesome. IMO the biggest advantage of the EVF is getting to see your exposure as you have set it in the viewfinder itself. I did not have a DSLR at that time so I was not biased while evaluating the viewfinders.

I think anybody looking at their first DSLR should seriously consider a SLT with an EVF. It can provide a faster learning curve and a much better overall shooting experience (as EVFs also have lot of other value added features like live histogram etc).

@Joslicx register your Sony A57 in Sony India and mail their CC a scanned copy of your bill and warranty,they will send you a Free 50F1.8 lens .
If you have already registered ,mention the registration code that you got while registering and attach the scanned copy of bill and warranty card to them.You will get the lens in 7 to 10 days.

speaking of astro-photos, for the meteor shower last month, I was randomly opening the shutter hoping to catch a meteor. all I could get was a plane passing by. This was seen on the LCD pretty well (nex 5R has no VF).

Nex 5R, 50mm at F1.7, 20 second, ISO 400. I know it's too long for that focal length to avoid trailing.

It was a 60 seconds exposure, hence the streaking.

This one is 25 seconds, less streaking. See in full size, it is really big.

D800. Whats good and bad about it? Please, Please give a few pointers!*

* I want and only want the views of folks who have bought it and have used it for a month and who are atleast pro- sumer. Ofcourse they would have to compare with FX, or film, and obviously have a more than one set of glass!

Good one for a handheld..no tripod. :) BTW, what lens did you use for this one? 25mm/1.4 and then crop the file?

There's quite a bit of feedback on the D800 here with a handful of owners, myself included, sharing our thoughts and/or user experiences. And yes, all of us have multiple lenses (:uncontrol) and have been using the camera for more than a few months. And yes we are also advanced amateurs and this thread has inputs on the D800 and other cameras from some highly skilled photographers including professionals. Please use the search function.

As you have already read articles on the net and probably checked several sample and real life photos with various combinations of lenses, what additional "owner experience" inputs are you looking for here? And why? Need the background please.

Anyone here in Bangalore or India tried to capture the ISS ,each time it comes over Bangalore is when its yet to be dark.

Thanks for the tip but I went with a mirrorless (Olympus OM-D) this time :) so no A57 for me. During the decision time I contemplated a lot between the Nikon D7000 and Sony A77. I was about to pick up the D7000 when I came across the Oly. basically the benefits of the m4/3 world (and my own photography requirements which are street photography and portraits) meant the Oly became the obvious choice. Now i am just waiting for my 45mm (should be getting it in a coupla days) and will later pick up the Panasonic 20mm. combined with my Kata shoulder bag, this kit is less than 1KG and meets all my requirements! What else is needed :)
