Apple TV

Hi. I couldn't find a thread on this subject and hence am asking some questions on this new one. If there is indeed a thread on apple tv, then mods, please merge this into that.

I just bought an apple tv thingamajig. I ve got the iPad and the iPod touch to connect up with my TV through the apple tv box. Need some help on this because while I know that it can help play back my videos and photos and possibly YouTube etc on my tv screen, I would like to know what else it can do to enhance the user entertainment experience.

Is it available yet in the India apple stores? To the best of my knowledge it wasn't and hence I picked it up on my holiday.

Any help and inputs on this machine would be most welcome.
Thanks.

re: Apple TV

Hi. Apple tv can only be used in the states for Netflix and watching movies online. But you can play videos and photos from your iPad or iPod on the tv via the apple tv. Thereis something called AirPlay which lets you play content from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch on your HDTV. As I said earlier apple tv can only be used to watch movies via the apple store or Netflix in the states as it connects based on your IP address. But there is a way of using it overseas if you mask your ip address, my brother has an apple tv here and that's what he does to watch movies online. Plus if you connect using a masked IP you will need to have a US account with a US credit card there is a way of doing it and it's not hard. If you need more info do let me know I'll ask my brother

You can use Apple TV in India without any mod/IP masking. You need to create an Apple id with iTunes pre-paid card (instead of credit card) and then it works. I have been using Apple TV to AirPlay IOS devices as well as rent latest movies and watch.

You can rent movies from iTunes by setting a US account and set change location on Apple TV to US, which is easy. But Netflix is cheaper for renting compared to iTunes and for that you will have to mask IP.

If you are adventurous, you can jailbreak your Apple TV and install XBMC - Apple tv News, Videos, Reviews and Gossip - Lifehacker

I have a 3rd gen Apple TV. Using it daily to watch Netflix in India. All you need is an IP from a service provider like unlocator

I have not used the 4th gen Apple TV. But from reading the reviews, it atleast has an 'AppStore'. Most importantly for me, it has official Plex app.

I'd strongly discourage buying 3rd gen Apple TV. You can't jailbreak it (unlike 1st or 2nd gen ATVs), running Plex via PlexConnect experience was awful to say the least.

However from yesterday's experience I was able to stream from my android Plex app to Apple TV. But you won't see the summary as you get when you pair with Chromecast.

If you like using your TV as an extended display device/mirroring from a Mac. It'll be of some use atleast.

Otherwise if you are using purely as a media streaming device I don't see Apple TV (even 4th gen) being worth a buy against Chromecast, which is 1/3rd 4th ATV's price (40€ vs 150€).

Thanks. I had already set DNS on my Apple TV last week and was still getting local content.

Some 2 hrs of burning midnight oil yday, finally made US content to work on Apple TV after setting up VPN from the modem itself.

Am interested to know if you've been able to make HBO Now work? I understand this needs a US credit card or US iTunes cards to work. Any inputs would be helpful.

Yes. I created a dummy US iTunes account. Took the trial version for one month and watched GOT on Apple TV.

Re: The TV / Streaming shows thread (no spoilers please)

Folks - Not sure if this is the right place to put up this question.

I have a Sony Smart TV as well as an Apple TV connected to it. Till yesterday, Prime Video worked pretty well in both. Yesterday morning onwards, Prime Video is stuck on the loading screen in both devices. I uninstalled Prime Video from Apple TV and reinstalled it. Once reinstalled, Prime Video goes to the login screen, but is not able to fetch a QR code or a login code. Other OTT channels such as Apple TV, Netflix , Jio Cinema and Hotstar seems to work just fine. Have rebooted routers, connected via LAN and tried emptying cache. Incidentally Prime Video works perfectly on iPhone. Any help to get this working would be much appreciated

Cheers

Providing an update. I called up Amazon customer care and they mentioned that this is a stated problem. The solution provided was to connect the network to hotspot and then register. Once that is done, then one can go back to the home wifi. I did it and it worked. Primevideo is now registered. However, the next day the problem was back on. On the home wifi Primevideo was stubborn to not connect. Moved to hotspot and voila it works. If anyone has any suggestions/recommendations to make Primevideo work on wifi, please do let me know.
Cheers
