BTW may be a bit off topic but whats the optimum temperature of internal laptop harddisk 5400 RPM ones ?

it will start from ambient to about 55-60 degrees......

I bought an IBM 10GB in 1998 & another 40Gb in 2001 both have still survived the test inspite of me changing my comp several times.

BTW, I am terribly interested in the hot contents in iraghava's drive.

You mean Seagate, right? Seagate bought Maxtor in 2006. The takeover was announced in December 2005

Correct. But Maxtor R&D still operates independantly for now. It's a corporate takeover. If maxtor goes the seagate way, then we're DOOMED.

Hitachi is also good. I have 2x250gb sata2 hdds and working fine. I got one for 4.4k and another for 4k, right now it should be around 3.5k.

guys i seem to be having a problem.just bought a 120GB external WD hdd with casing.the computer cant detect the external hdd.im running windows xp.in the device manager it shows that a usb masss torage device is connected but in the my computer window, the icon for the hdd isnt visible.i have loaded the drivers and windows says that the device is working properly.even tried it on a friends pc and the icon isnt visible in his computer either.there is a constant clicking sound from the hard drive(like its spinning up & down).the casing led shows that the hdd is ready for use.i bought it from nehru place for 3650.couldnt find the transcend casing anywhere.so i bought a casing branded venktron(cost 150 bucks).
is there something wrong with the hdd or am i doing something wrong.its just been 10hrs since i bought it so should i go replace it.will the shop replace it.
and should again opt for wd or should i buy hitachi as hey cost the same.
also saw the lacie external drive 120gb for rs.5700.

Seems to be a bad day for me. Both my 160 GB SAMSUNG HDD'd crashed today with no reason whatsoever. It has been just an years since i bought these HDD's and they refuse to boot up. Lost all my precious data. Wasted 2 hours with them to see if they work and all in vain.

Just a friendly reminder to fellow BHPIANS that don't insist on Samsung HDD's rather buy Seagate as my laptop HDD which is abused daily is till working in great condition. If you can spend more money buy WD instead.

Guys as my HDD's crashed i am gonna get the new HDD tomorrow. So which one should it be HITACHI or SEAGATE 160 GB. I want a HDD that is reliable and unlike Samsung just die in an year or so. I have all everything and i mean everything. Songs, movies, games, funny stuff thank god i did some back up in DVD's earlier and haven't updated much after that.

I am getting both for almost same price. RS. 2200 - 2400. So should i go for HITACHI or SEAGATE ?

Seagate.Go for 250GB one(around 3K) and insist on the Baracuda 7200.10 series. They are lighter, slimmer and faster than the 7200.9 series.

Hi Go 4 Ne Laptop Hdd & Buy A Sony 2.5" Usb Casing.. It Works Well..

I am looking to buy an external (2.5") HDD. The choice is between WD and Transcend (the latter being cheaper by around Rs 650).

Western Digital Passport External HDD 320 GB

vs

Transcend StoreJet 320 GB

Advise needed ASAP, since the discount voucher expires on Jan 20th!

@Nishant - Opt for WD as they have a better After-sales support which includes faulty drive pickup-droping from home only :)
