Which Portable HDD ?
(
https://www.team-bhp.com/forum/gadgets-computers-software/19564-portable-hdd-9.html)
What is the going price for eSATA external drives in Mumbai? Anyone any idea. I am looking for both 2.5" and the big ones, but prefer the first.
I am looking to buy an external HDD. My requirements :-
1. Atleast 1 TB (preferrably 2 TB.). Since I am looking at it for long term reliablity (against HDD crashes) is the main factor.
2. Completely powered by USB (no external power supply). External power supply defeats the purpose of having fully portable external HDD.
Do suggest me good brands.
I could even get it from US if required!. But 2 conditions above has to be met.

Esata option is totally out if you are preferring portable drives. On desktop external there are option. But you can go for USB/firewire400/800 portable drives.
you have to decide on this one then i will give you the approx price.

again if you want portable ones. 2tb is totally out. you can get max 1tb WD passport. or seagate freagent. Its little bit expensive now but it will eventually come down. current price is over 10k.
Bought a WD 500 GB from Nehru Place few days back. Am transferring data now to this new HD from my old HDDs. Have also registered this product for warranty at WD website.
Just bought a transcend 320 GB portable harddisk for 3275. It has a external button for a single touch backup feature.
Just bought a 500GB Seagate FreeAgent Go Portable Drive 2.5" for 5,250/- with Bill & Warranty. So far, its been good. Also will go for the 1TB 3.5" Seagate with external power soon. Even thats coming to around the same price. Have heard from many dealers / assemblers that Seagate is one of the more reliable manufacturers.
hi,
recently i bought a new Transcend 320 gb portable hdd and to my surprise i found that the space available on the disk is only 300 gb.
is this how it is like the mileage claim of a bike manufacturer :( but 20 gb difference is too much i feel.
^^^
its normal. Its how the bytes are calculated.

1 GB = 1,073,741,824 bytes (not 1,000,000,000)

Even i have a 320 GB which shows up as 300 GB. HDD manufacturers calculate 1 GB as 1000 Mb and 1 Mb as 1000 kb and then likewise.
While your OS calculates 1 GB as 1024 Mb and then onwards likewise.
So technically your HDD capacity will always be lesser then the stated capacity in your OS

Raw space would be 320gb. The 300gb you are seeing is the usable space after formatting is done. Some space is also used to create the partition table etc.
Like SirAlec said, it is normal.

I dont think you will get a 1TB USB drive that is not externally powered.
The power supply in a USB drive does not have enough juice to power a 1TB or > HDD.
Once USB 3.0 comes out commercially it might be possible. In addition to increased speed, USB 3.0 has increased bus power to handle devices that require more power.
