The room can accommodate a bigger screen , but folks are more keen on Samsung LED. Should take the plunge in next few days, will keep you posted. Thanks again for your response.

I am toying with the idea of upgrading my more-than-half-a-decade-old 21" Sony CRT TV with a new 40"/42" Plasma/LCD/LED TV. The TV will be in the hall with a size of 18' x 12'. The uage is mainly for TV programmes through TataSky STB and movies through DVD/external HDD. Already I visited Samsung Plaza, Rajajinagar I Block, had a dekko and liked 42" LED TV Series 6.

Kindly suggest the following:

Whice type of panel should I choose? LED/LCD/Plasma? I am told LED is the latest technology which offers the best clarity of picture in HD.

Which brand? Samsung or Sony or anyother?

Kindly enlighten me.

Take that claim about LED with a pinch of salt. It is heavily promoted due to commercial reasons (better margin for dealers).

If you primary usage is TV programs, all three technologies are more than enough. Difference in performance comes into picture with higher quality content like Blu Ray or DVD.

I would suggest Plasma. Reason is, you can get 42 inch plasma for approx 40k. In terms of brands, avoid Sony. Sony does not have option of buying additional warranty on TVs. And if there is any issue with panels, fixing it costs nearly as much as buying a new TV.

@J. Ravi - Netfreakbombay is right on , with your hall being 18' it would be good to go for 46" or 50" check out, carry a movie on usb to check on the performance of different tv sets so you can judge the difference from the same source. Most of these models support dvix and hd divx.

I ordered Belkin gold series surge protector for my Panny 42V20. Is that good enough or should i have a UPS?

sathish, after two damaged PCs, I connect the PC to UPS through a spike buster.

Did you use spike buster when your computers conked off? This Belkin thing sounds like a better one compared to regular spike busters. Belkin is offering lifetime warranty and up to 1,00,000 damage coverage on this device.

Also i think when you have both UPS and surge protector, surge protector should be connected to the wall outlet and UPS to the surge protector.

I use the surge protector to protect the PC from the UPS. ;-(

Sounds strange, but both hardware failures for my PCs happened due to the UPS developing faults. I had asked around in this forum itself (the PC configuration thread, IIRC), and was referred to Belkin. The complaints with UPSes was that they gave out abnormally high voltage during switchover / mains power outage. Just today, got a 6 outlet belkin surge protector for Rs. 575/- from a shop here.

But I have other non-critical equipment protected by non-Belkin power protectors. That is more "multply the 5 AMP socket" than surge protection.

Unfortunately only way to protect from that is to use a CVT (Constant Voltage Transformer). It has NO moving parts and easily lasts 10+ years.

Any Idea of Videocon VRL32HBM LCD TV ? Is this better than LG/Samsung/Sony. The shop is offering 3 yrs of warranty. And the Special price is 28K.

Basically I am looking for some thing in 32".

In my opinion, I can rate it like this,

Samsung, Sony, LG and Videocon.

The Samsung HD Ready [4 series], you can get for 31-32K i think. So, why not try that?
