Re: BSNL Satellite Phone now available to anyone in India

Sat Phone calls are insanely expensive. Is this way of making money by sinking BSNL by making it available to the large public ?

Around the same time last year, call rates were 5 rupees per minute and every phone came with INR 500 monthly rent. Former defense minister intervened and reduced the cost for our brave jawans.

This is nothing new. BSNL has this service running since 2017.

It's an old requirement. Nowadays, even WhatsApp communication cannot be intercepted.

Re: BSNL Satellite Phone now available to anyone in India

Has anyone in the group tried this? i checked in the BSNL website and there's not much of info on cost and procedures to get one. It only has info on 1100 ish payment on registration, nothing else. I stay on the out skirts of Chennai and i hardly have 2 or 3 bars of signal, this will be of good use to me provided the cost is affordable...

One should be able to use their normal phones for text/emergencies. Starlink has arrangement with T-Mobile in US to do this on its gen 2 satellites. Good to see BSNL doing this and hope its not just to show and is available to customers. But I would have hoped one of airtel/Jio to do this since it will make it available to larger customer base.
