Slightly off topic, but out of curiosity: What kind of (5G) platform did Rakuten Japan buy from you? I thought Rakuten was essentially a huge retailer organisation, but not a (mobile) operator themselves? Or not?

thanks for clarifying

Re: What new technologies do you expect in the 2020-30 decade?

On original post:

Streaming services is not exactly new technology; it is new category of service leveraging existing technology, viz broadband internet and proliferation of digital devices.

On Topic:

Some new areas of tech development I really look forward to are:

New Age Batteries: This is the real tech bottleneck we face today! Imagine how efficient and user friendly digital devices will become if we can develop better dry cell, or whatever new tech that emerges! Today, the bulk of any digital device is its battery; EVs are really limited because of the scope and range of their batteries.

Augmented Reality: This is a really exciting space and may change 'reality' and how we engage with it. Imagine, tomorrow a digital interaction will be a 3D space, VCs are no longer talking to a screen but a holographic 3D projection, e-commerce is not mere scrolling of images but a virtual walk down an aisle!

Drones: There is no looking back. Drones are the new kites our kids will fly! everything from traffic policing to home deliveries will be done by drones. Forget airspace 20,000 Ft above see, your balcony will now face a tussle between pigeons and drones!

Techs I dread:

Artificial Intelligence: give me organic intelligence any day! A BOT, no matter how smart is still a BOT and I am not very keen to be pals with them!

Autonomous cars: seriously? You wanna rob me of all little joys of this life?

IoT: not really sure where it is going towards. I would love my fridge to automatically replenish my beer stack, or remember to fill up the ice tray, but beyond that I am really wary about this tech.

Re: What new technologies do you expect in the 2020-30 decade?

Interesting topic. Just yesterday I was watching a very interesting video for Microsoft Mesh. It uses mixed reality to take virtual working/ work from anywhere to altogether another level. Basically whatever we saw in sci-fi movies over the years and Marvel Universe over the last decade or so is becoming a reality. It is really hard to imagine how MS Mesh and other such tech are going to change various industries in a short span of time.

My 2 paisa
1. Energy storage beyond conventional batteries like making use of gravitation, compressed air, etc to store energy. (Not a new tech but not economically viable at the moment)
2. Catapulting unmanned space missions without the use of large rockets. (Idea is not new but tech is not there for a mission like this, at least in public domain)

You can find details Here. They had significant presence with 4G (They have virtualized the 4G hardware using the company called ALTIOSTAR and they want to build a containerized environment (Docker / Helm charts specifically) on top of Kubernetes, that is where we came in. We provided them the Kubernetes platform that can manage their FPGA based on PCIe.

I hear they want to be amazon of everything in Japan.

My vision for 2030 is simple. We will have awesome houses full of crazy technology and comforts.

But stepping outside into the world might be a bit of a challenge as we will not be able to breathe without protection nor stand in the sun without some special suit protecting our skin.

So the technology boom will be in the sphere of personal environment control systems.

Mainstream adoption of Solid-state batteries is quite likely this decade. Many companies are presently working on them, including Toyota and VAG.

Compared to the present battery technology, they are expected to be of smaller size with higher energy density, longer lifespan, and less chance of fires. This could be a game-changer in various fields like EVs, mobile phones, laptops, drones, etc.

Re: What new technologies do you expect in the 2020-30 decade?

Since this is an imaginary thread, I will try to put my imagination below

Connecting thoughts: Some chip inserted into the body collects the signals from brain, converts to understandable code and transmits to other products such as vehicles, music player, video player, house hold appliances like cooker, oven, etc.

The products collects the signals, processes and required signals back to target organs and satisfy their needs.

Examples:
1. I start thinking about eating masala dosa. The signals are caught by chip, transmits to some other appliances which sends signals to chip back that creates required taste, smell and feel to tongue, nose and stomach.

So you don't need actual masala dosa to get that satisfaction of eating it.

Example 2: I will think about a long journey to Leh sitting at my home. I will start getting all required signals that gives mental satisfaction of visiting Leh, traveling and passing those passes, good, bad and ugly experiences.

Overall all my senses and brain will get all real time experiences sitting at home.

No need to move an inch around.

But at the end, as T S Eliot has said, with all these technological advances, it just may mean "We had the experience but missed the meaning"

One thing that I can think of, and I hope and pray that it doesn’t happen - Anti Ageing/ prolonged life to the choice of individuals kind of innovations in the Medical field.

Re: What new technologies do you expect in the 2020-30 decade?

Elon Musk has already hooked up wires into a monkey's brain so that a hooked robot does what the monkey thinks has to be done.

The other thing is - there exist robotic exoskeletons to augment man's physical prowess.

Putting the two together, I expect rogue nations like China to put forth a new breed of super soldiers to indulge in land-grabbing by mowing down their opponent armies. A full blown world war isn't all that unreal in the next decade.

Re: What new technologies do you expect in the 2020-30 decade?

I am predicting on breakthroughs and thereby applications in the 'nano' field as well as mega field.
Nano would mean medicine and metallurgy/machines. Mega would be civil and aerospace.

Aviation has always been at the forefront of technology advancement and those features are now coming on to the ground. Think propulsion, navigation, autonomy, ADSB, Radar, Fly-by-wire.

Technology would move into the ever-connected model - An omni-present network accessible and connected to all powered equipment. It would be an interesting decade.

Re: What new technologies do you expect in the 2020-30 decade?

I can guarantee you one thing - for virtually (not all!) any new technology, the porn industry will be almost always the first one to develop the pathway to commercialization.

Also recommend reading Kentaro Toyoma - Geek Heresy: Rescuing Social Change from the Cult of Technology. Argues that we so often forget that tech is a magnifier / amplifier for both good and bad. Without education, law& order, civic and democratic rule - tech does not necessary foreshadow a golden era.
