Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced at the company’s Connect event that the company’s new name will be
Meta.
They are branding Meta as A Social Technology Company. Along with this they also announced a $10 million Creator Fund to encourage creators/people to create content in their Horizon Worlds. Also, a $50 million investment in global research and program partners to help build the metaverse collaboratively was announced.
“We are a company that builds technology to connect,” Zuckerberg said. “Together, we can finally put people at the centre of our technology. And together, we can unlock a massively bigger creator economy.”
This massive rebranding comes after Facebook had gone through a series of data leaks and privacy violations, especially after revelations based on damning internal documents provided by whistleblower Frances Haugen showed, among other things, that Facebook’s Instagram platform had become a toxic place for teenagers. And antitrust regulators are pushing for the company to be broken up, as public trust in the social media platform is flagging.
Facebook further clarified that The names of the apps that they build—Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp—will remain the same.
They also revealed
Ray-Ban Stories: Their first-generation smart glasses that let you capture photos and videos, take phone calls and listen to music.

That name and logo looks a lot better that what Google did to themselves.
Facebook’s smartwatch (codenamed:Milan) leaked, it has a camera and aims to take on Apple Watch.

Facebook/Meta’s smartwatch is said to have detachable wrist straps and a single button on the right side of its casing. According to Gurman and other industry rumors, Facebook/Meta had been planning to launch the smartwatch in early 2022, but final timeline has not been confirmed.

Meta is to Facebook as Alphabet is to Google.
Well, for me, I’m indifferent. I’m not on Facebook and don’t even know what to make of this. Seems more like the ‘Parental company’ name, and keeping Facebook, WhatsApp and Insta separate.

That image with the prominent camera, is sending shivers down my spine already. Thats like installing a FB CC tv into your life.
All said and done, there is enough evidence now that a corporation like FB needs to be brought down. The intent with which they have done business indicates that they have no Moral compass.

This is a nightmare. If they did not have enough information (gasp!) already about users, they will now have their dirty hands on heart rate, Sp02, steps walked and possibly ECG and if they detect any abnormalities - start pushing ads about doctors in your locality.
Next update: order medicines directly from FBshop thru the watch. No need to provide address, we already know where you live.

WOW, This watch looks ugly.
Even if there was no camera, the sides are too curvy, either apple watch or Samsung/OnePlus watch, what is this lol:
Facebook thought maybe its time to separate their company from the social media platform as Facebook was under the radar for a long time now and ultimately harmed the business, seems like a Google-Alphabet situation, let's see what the future holds.

This whole smart watch thing (Apple, facebook et all) reminded me of the good old days. Who remembers this serial?.

Very weary of the new name 'meta', sort of confirms the notion that the organization has ulterior motives.
I think any hardware from Facebook will start under the suspicion of spying and lack of privacy. Don't think the watch will get wide acceptance.
Well, at least they stayed true to their origin legacy of stealing. Pathetic they had to copy it from a comic book.
Sad such a big company does not have the creative talent to even come up with a name for itself. Or perhaps it's only as creative as it's head.
Cheers

Not targeted specifically at you but even if we consciously stay away, they are still able to create a shadow profile of most people. Sites, phone book of friends etc. the sources are endless to harvest this sort of data. The worst part? FB users can ask FB about the data it has for them. Being a non user, you can’t even ask them that.
An old article but explains things quite well -

Unless someone has been completely off the grid, you can’t realistically keep these guys out of your life.
The name Meta seems more likely to be associated with Metaverse than metadata. They are going to use virtual reality and augmented reality to provide the masses with an overwhelming experience with Metaverse. As has been depicted in the movie Wall-E, among others, people 'live' their lives in the virtual world. Eating, drinking, partying, working, playing, socialising and so on while just sitting in your bermuda on your sofa. I am pretty sure it will become a rage among the then current generation. I reckon within the next decade or so we'd be among those wearing VR/AR headsets most of the time during a given day. Nobody could have imagined in the 90s the kind of affection a human being has with his cellular mobile device, with FB/Insta/Google. Same could be the case with Metaverse. Living your dream inside the Metaverse while your avatar interacts on behalf of you, is going to be the next reality. Using crypto currencies, NFTs, blockchain and techinologies yet to evolve one is likely to never leave his/her home premises and still 'explore' the universe, ler alone the world. 10 years back it seemed silly seeing people playing Farmville and games like those on FB and elsewhere and getting hooked to it, I could never understand what were all those silly games about. Now it makes sense. Playing Farmville in the virtual world, farming, raising your own crops/poultry etc is something one could not even imagine doing in the real world.
I am pretty sure the virtual world being started through Metaverse would become so serious in the future that if your avatar gets killed in a road accident by someone else's avatar, you would be able to claim insurance for that in the real world. rl: We are lucky to be living in times where fiction is becoming reality quite literally.::Cheering:
