Sony Ericsson W550i problem

After some upgrades to my PC recently, nothing involving any USB ports however, when I connect my phone to the PC with the USB cable, it says 'device is not recognized'. I am not trying to use the PC sync software, I am merely trying to put the phone in file transfer mode to take files off it.

Can anyone recommend a POA?

Cheers all!

Try to connect another device like a pen drive or something.. see if that is getting recognised.

Exactly what kind of upgrades did you do ? If you are still on Win XP , there should be no trouble whatsoever (Unless your usb cable has gone kaput).

It's happened to me a few times. A reboot normally solves my issues. Do check if your USB driver is working right, though I'm assuming your keyboard and mouse are USB and are working, hence the post.

I dont know if this is a valid explanation, but let me explain what happened when using the Razr V3...All of a sudden, it said device not recognized. However, when I connected it to the ACTUAL USB port which it was initially connected to, it worked!!... I dont know why thats the case, I think its because, usually in laptops 2 USB ports are detected as USB hub and 2 ports as actual ports. I am not sure, its a wild guess.

Try this after connecting your phone to USB (and after you get "Device not recognized):

1) Right click on "My computer" and select "Properties"
2) Select Hardware and then click on Device Manager
3) On the hierarchy you will see the name of your computer, right click on it and select scan for hardware changes.
4) If the manager finds any device which has a problem it will show a red or yellow sign (like the one seen on report bad post icon here on the left of this post). Chances are that your phone will be shown under USB devices.
5) Right click on that device and choose "Update Driver". A pop-up window will open which will give you an option to
a) Install the software automatically
b) Install the software from a specific location
Select option b.
6) Click next twice and it will install your hardware.

Hope this helps. Let me know.

Cheers,
Kiran

Ok, I've tried everything suggested by everyone but to no avail.

Godfather: I connected a pen drive, my handycam etc, everything works fine.

E_L: Two upgrades - Office 2007 running on Win XP, but this has been a while back, and the phone used to work fine then I think. Added a 500 GB hard drive, this has also slowed down my machine considerably.

v1p3r: Reboot didnt help. I uninstalled the PC Suite and re-installed it too.

kvish: My PC has about 6 USB ports. I have tried connecting to all of them. ALso on other PCs.

moralfibre: updated the driver etc. etc. Still at square one.

Hellllppppppp!

Contact Sony Erricson service and see if your phone is doing fine or not.

I forgot to mention: I have tried using a different USB cable with the phone to connect it to the PC also.

I've had this issue with my 700i earlier. For starters try using a diffrent software like My phone explorer,it's much more easier to use than the SE PC suite,a search on google will throw up the link. If it doesn't work with that either,I guess there's nothing else to do but carry it to the SE service centre and ask them to re-install the software.

Didn't work either. Any other options? Going to the Sony service station would be the last.
