thanks a ton Tanveer for opening this thread.....

me too going thro' same phase...my laptop HDD is almost full and i'm buying a HDD (maybe > 160GB.....we discussed this here)....i do not want to re-install all the softwares again. thankfully in the current HDD, i do not have any partitions. I have WINDOWS XP Professional edition.

actually i'm planning replace the existing HDD with new HDD and the use the old HDD as external USB one after putting it in Transcend casing. Is that a feasible option?

are u planning to buy Casper ??

I will use the trial version.
Currently my 50GB partition is 40GB full.
I will mirror it on the new HDD,
Then I will create another partition called documents and videos sized about 40GB on the new HDD and transfer "My Documents" folder to that.
This way I will have a C:\ on the new HDD with 50GB partition with about 25GB free to install more things if I need.

Yea I saw that too. The software does not matter, all I wanted to find out is whether disk mirroring will work.

Nehru Place is a 40 minutes drive, so it may take couple of days.

Found out that 160GB is the largest capacity available in 7200 rpm and costs 5500. Much above my budget
Any idea about prices of 160GB+ HDD in 5400rpm range?

I have a dell Inspiron E1505/6400. Any particular thing I need to take care of while choosing the 2.5" HDD?

Checked with the sys ad in office and he also uses Norton Ghost and he said it makes it very simple. But like you I am also a little scared of Norton products and dont know if it will be successful if one has dual boot

Tanveer sir you can call this number 9899569096 (Amba Computer Systems) in NehruPlace. He gives a nice rate.

With my personal experience one should not go for the largest capacity but one lower because the price difference is phenomenal. Why dont you go for a segate/samsung 100Gig for now and at the same time but a small USB casing for 400 bucks to use your old disk as a USB drive

i would warn you to stay away from norton ghost, i have tried to use it twice and both times i lost all my data (both were dell laptops). i got the blue screen of death and windows would not even start. it might have been a problem with a specific version of norton ghost, though i do not remmeber the version.

Double whammy! The 5500 price is for ATA 2.5".
Dell Core duo takes in SATA150, price= 6500+ for 160GB.
I guess best plan is to get casing + HDD for around 120$ from the US.
Casing is 1000rs+ in nehru place.

a 5400rpm drive vs a 7200rpm drive makes a huge difference, id pay more for the 7200 cause it is quite faster.
