hi friends

i just needed some suggestions regarding which speaker system should i go in for under 10k, i had a look at the creative & logitech though i am yet to do an audition on them. earlier i was planning to go in for logitech x540 (70watt rms)but just went through the phillips site and saw home theater system [hts 3107/98] for 13k with a mind boggling 500w rms. just got confused so thought to take in some suggestions. [Use would be mostly movies and music from either my sony dvd player or rarely pc (i don't mind if the phillips speakers do not connect with my pc)]

cheers

you have mentioned a need for a speaker system under 10k, and have referred to a home theatre system of philips.

i hope you are clear with what you want in your budget.

the philips that you mentioned offers a DVD player and a 5.1 in a package for 13k. if you already have the players and sound sources, and need only a good speaker system and your budget is 10k, there are a few other options which come without the DVD player in LG and Philips.

(i assume you know very well about speaker positioning and that your living room allows for all that), I have seen in a place, they had a jazzy looking JVC multi-storey deck and all the 5 speakers muddled up near the woofer. so much for the 5.1!!!

if you are not too keen about a 5.1, please audition the Altec Lansing's MX5021 THX certified. it is a 2.1 speaker system and has amazing audiophile clarity at a beginner level pricing. i think the latest price in Mumbai is not more than Rs. 9000.

+1 for the altec lansing mx 5021 if you are only into music however if your use is more towards dvd and gaming you may consider 5.1 options like the creative megaworks although they may exceed your budget by a little amount.

1. AudioEngine A2 - A 2.0 speaker system. Tons of SQ and Quality bass!
2. AltecLansing FX6021 - 2.1. IMO slightly better than MX5021. Also FX mode is good for surroud sound/imaging
3. Kiplish Promedia - 2.0 and 2.1 both. Gr8 SQ again

Biggest problem - DEMO/Auditioning!! :Frustrati

Altec Lansing MX5021(2.1) is good for music even for movie is also good.It cost around Rs 7500/- i think. For a computer speaker MX5021 is really good and having better sound quality than other normal computer speakers. It has really tight bass.Value for money.

Audio Engine A2 speaker system is a audiophile pedgree. It is basically for music lovers who needs clarity. We cannot compare this speakers with other computer speakers. It sounds great.Price is Rs 9999/-

I haven't heard the Audio Engines but I guess they should sound better than the Altecs. But then I'm a bit biased towards 2.0 setups rather than sub/sat versions.

Saw an advt in a newspaper sometime back where Sony had slashed prices of their Home theater systems. Prices start at 10k now. Take a demo of the Sony HT. IMHO the ouput clarity on Sony is better than philips. [no offence meant to philips owners. this is purely my opinion]

AMEN!

These speakers are so good that I'll have to spend atleast 50k to make my ICE sound as good.

Ditto! A pair of Quality bookshelf speakers with good impedance is all you need!!

For multimedia: checkout SWANS from HiVi. The M200 active monitors (powered) costs about 10k. Supposedly audiophile.

The 500rms at 12k will have lots of noise than music coming out. If looking for home theater purpose as well, then check out the old DZ-DAV series from SONY. The 550K was going discounted at 15k. Quite a capable system it is. The newer 750 or 720 is on sale at indiatimes for 20k or so.

I agree with you Gunbir. If it is audiophile pedgree then for sure.

i need complete and tight bass within the budget [priority] , Sound Detailing is not that important for me (secondary)

Is there a 5.1 which i should consider (eg. logitech x540 ) in my budget or is it better to go for 2.1 or 2.0 ??

I will still suggest you go for the altecs since it is always better to go for the highest 2.1 in altec than to go for the lowest model in the audioengine series and seriously if you consider the specs the audioengine has a 2.75 inch woofers:uncontrol ,the altec has 3 inch mid ranges in addition to the 6.5 inch sub and even in terms of frequency response the altec goes low all the way to 20hz whereas the audioengine only goes till 65 hz.So these are the numbers but still if possible audition both of these and then decide. As for the choice between 2.0/2.1 and 5.1 the former is for music whereas the latter is more for dvd/gaming.

I feel that you should go in for the logitech z-2300, its has a power packed 200 Watts RMS and costs around 100$.

I am myself on the lookout for any relative who is coming to india from the US who can get it for me....

did you look at onkyo series. will fit your budget if you can get from the US.
