Fellows

This morning, a worker from my office came to me with a pendrive type thingy. He told me he found it in the rickshaw he came to work in. I soon realised that it was the Tata Indicom USB modem. I have kept it with me now. My laptop is WiFi enabled and I think this USB thingy can be used for the net with my laptop. What else do I need apart from this modem to get it working?

Can anyone who has used these things help me figure things out?

ahemm, dippy the modem is actually a CDMA phone. it will have a simcard type slot. The person will block the number.

I don't think it will be mush use for you unless you subscribe to Tata indicom.

The better thing would be to call up Tata indicom and try and return it. It costs Rs.3000.

Yup Vid is right. It will be blocked by the person who lost it. Till the time he realises it - get the software and try connecting to the net :D

Yes Vid & NC are right, if you get the software & the sim is not blocked then you can use it since it does not use any password by default.

p.s. having Wi-Fi in your Laptop has no connection with this :)

I think, you should take it to a Tata Indicom store, let them figure out whose it is. And return it back to him.

Anyway it will blocked, so I don't think you can use it.

Ok so you have any idea of a Tata Indicom Store in our area?

Anyway, you need the TATA indicom software to use the USB modem. If you have it, then its really easy, just plug and play. The software will show if you have signal or not, if you have, then press connect button and zoom off into the net. At least, that is how it works with the PCMCIA card. USB should not be any different.

dippy return the thingie to tataindicom guys

Better to return it to any tata indicom store. Morever you will be disappointed by the speed of that modem. It is for those who are travelling and in need of net during travel. Slightly better than dial up.

Hi,

I use tata indicom usb plug2surf as well once a while when my bsnl internet goes down.

Tata indicom usb plug2surf usb modem costs 2850/-.

If you want to use that go to tataindicom store and buy new sim and subscribe for the appropriate rate plan and install the software in your laptop and use it :)

If you want to return it make sure it goes to the owner by contacting tataindicom helpline.

I feel they can locate address of the person who owns that sim. If he had given alternate number during tataindicom subscription you can find owner else just throw the sim and buy new sim and start using it.

Regards,

Ravi.

Haven't used Tata indicom USB modem, but used Reliance data card earlier and it sucks big time. This probably wont be any better than that.

Anyway, if I were you, I could call up customer care or local Tata Indicom office (not el-cheapo vendors) to find the owner and return it. It's not worth keeping it.

Actually you can use it. Ask the TATA guys to give you a new connection on your existing modem, they'll then provide you with the a new SIM & number & you're ready to go! As for the driver's, I'll email them across to you.

BUT the right thing to do would be to return the modem to its rightful owner.

@RX - There is no comparison between Reliance and Tata Indicom. Reliance is worse w.r.t dial-up, TATA Indicom is decent enough(unless you are downloading few 100 MB's of data). And you can be connected while on the move, which is great.

I was browsing t-BHP on my train journey a coupla days back.

I will be returning the USB to an Indicom centre. If its a sim that belongs to someone, he might be a worried guy. I didnt know before that its actually a sim in there. Its just like using someone else's phone which I dont want to do.

Should return it by this evening.

yes yes he will return it im sure. no need to tell him 11 times :)
