Re: Advice on Home Theatre Amplifier

Reviving this thread.

I bought a new TV for my parents and I need advice on how to connect two old speakers to it.

The TV has multiple HDMI, USB and other ports as you see in the image below.

How do I connect the speakers which uses spring type connectors?

You cannot connect those speakers to the TV.

You'll need a digital to analog converter or DAC, take the optical out from the TV into the DAC, plug the DAC into an amplifier or the Sony stereo that goes with those speakers.

Thanks sandeepmohan. I wanted to make use of the speakers, as the Sony stereo is long gone. As per your suggestion, I need to get
  • An optical cable (from TV to DAC - Amazon Link)
  • A DAC (Amazon Link; Will check any one from the list, or will source from local market)
  • An amplifier (No idea on how to buy one. Can you suggest something?)
How would I connect the DAC to the amplifier? And I guess the amplifier should be able to connect the speakers through speaker wires?

It actually really depends upon how much you are willing to spend? That 900 Rs DAC that you have linked is going to sound as bad if not worse than the one in your TV.
What exactly are you looking to do here ? Just hook those Sony speakers to the TV? Unless the speakers are very good ( I doubt, given the speaker connectors that they have) it makes no sense to put in money to hook these old speakers.

You are much better getting a new all in one system. If you still want to hook the Sony speakers, you could get an integrated amplifier, that will have a DAC as well as an amp. Again, your budget will determine how to proceed.

You would use RCA cables to connect a DAC to the Amp. And yes, speaker wires out from amp to speaker connectors in.

You can look at getting norge audio 1515 ubt amplifier or norge audio 2030 ubt (non-bluetooth versions are also available. But then, you will need to get a DAC to convert optical signal to RCA). The ubt ones have bluetooth. The amplifiers should be in the range of Rs. 10-15 k. I am using one since 2016 paired to polk audio tower speakers and the sound quality is quite good. This will allow you to later upgrade the speakers to a pair of bookshelf or tower speakers, if you are so inclined.

Instead of going through the headache of a external DAC, Amplifier and speaker, buy this;

Will work out a lot easier for your folks.

You can use a mini amplifier like the one below.

https://www.amazon.in/dp/B071FJF4FF

or a similar & cheaper copy with a different name
