Quality of video (from worse to better)

- Composite
- S-video
- Component
- RGB (aka VGA aka D-sub) & DVI-A*, which is just analog over the DVI cable
- DVI-D* (truly digital) ~ HDMI (debatable as to if either one has the edge if im not mistaken)

* note that a DVI-I cable can carry both analog and digital, so it depends on what is supported by the device.

None of the above have audio (edit : except HDMI if im not mistaken)
From an old laptop like yours, you have the choice of S-video or RGB (aka VGA aka DSub).

To summarize what everyone above has said :
1. Buy a VGA to VGA cable. (the kind used to connect laptops to projectors etc)

Notice tht the bottom one has 2 different connector types. I think you will need one like the top one (male to male).

2. Buy a 3.5mm (headphone plug) to RCA (those red and white connectors). PLug the headphone end into your laptop, and the RCA end into your home theater.

Thats it. Very simple.
However, do remember to read your LCD tv manual and find out what the optimal(suggested) resolution is, and set your laptop to use that resolution on the output in order to get best results.

Buy nice long cables otherwise it may be a pain.

Component cable for DVD player

I was checking to buy a component cable in SP Road, Bangalore. the price varies between Rs 120-650 with no guarantee of the quality. Hence i checked net

RCA PLUG / CONNECTOR F.M. W / SPRING G.P.
@Rs 73/ per connector gold plated

RGB HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPONENT VIDEO OFC DIGITAL CABLE

RCA PLUG / CONNECTOR PROFESSIONAL GRADE (G.P.) (BK/RD/BL/GR)

RCA PLUG CRIMPING TYPE (GP)

3 RCA / 3 RCA DIGITAL AUDIO-VIDEO & DVD RGB CABLE SUITABLE FOR STUDIO, HOME THEATRE & OTHER HI-RANGE ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT L-100MTR.
@Rs 100/mtr

3RCA PLUG / 3 SOCKET CORD (RGB) 1.5M

I was thinking to buy the OFC cable given in the link above and buy connectors seperately. even than it costs about 600/-(1.5 mtr cable). the cost of OFC cable was Rs 11500/- 100 mtrs. the shop guy is not selling loose as he does not have enough customers for the products. otherwise he was selling the other cable for Rs 100/ mtr.

I would like to know is it better to buy OFC cable or go with the cable available.
will there be any difference in quality between ordinary cable and OFC cable?

You can check any of the following stores to get reasonable quality Component Cables. Get one with good shielding.

- Most Sony Showrooms
- Chroma
- Spar Hypermart - Electronics section
- Ezone
- Sonodyne Showroom (Forum)

Iam aware of the availability in these showrooms. but the idea is to buy the OFC cable and connectors separately from MX dealers and making own cable. will it be good compared to readily available one with respect to quality

First of all what is the TV that you are going to connect using these component video cables ?

If its a CRT TV, then a regular quality component cable will suffice. I don't think you will find any difference going with high quality OFC.

If its an LCD/Plasma, then just go with HDMI instead of spending money and time making your own high quality OFC component cable.
If your DVD player does not have HDMI out, its better to upgrade the DVD player it will prove useful in the future. cheers:

OFC as in "Optical fibre Channel." ? do you own a tool to patch the connector to OFC.

WHy are you using OFC (which is impossible or absurd in this context) anyway??

actually, I have a 50 Ft VGA+audio cable. and it works great, i can get computer monitor quality.

as far as I have seen, in the TV, you need to select what input you are using. once you switch to VGA, it mostly switches to a stereo in, so stereo to RCA (L/R) may not be needed. S-video to RCA gives very bad quality. And yes, i know I am replying to an old thread .

@rkg, do you really mean to use optical fiber? it's a complicated process and used only by ISPs and telephone providers.

I connect my laptop to the TV using S Video cable
However - had a question - my DVD player & TV both have component cable options - is it worth buying a component cable or a regular DVD video cable is just fine - my TV is a tube TV

What I gathered information from net couple of years ago when I bought LCD TV, DVD and other things that quality of Video will be in following order (best to worst)

1. HDMI
2. Component
3. S-Video
4. Composite (A/V - Yellow for Video and R+W for Audio)

Regards

It is indeed optical fibre cable made for component cable purpose. i have attached the link in my earlier post. the MAx webiste clearly mentions that it is a high performance OFC RGB cable. MAX also make connectors for RGB cable. i have enquired from three dealers of the max in bangalore. the cost is almost the same as ordinary RGB cable @ of Rs120 per metre as againsts Rs 100/- for ordinary RGB cable. but the only problem is getting 2 mtrs of this ofc cable as the guy said i have to take entire 100m mtr bundle at 12K because as of now he does not have customers for it

rkg, you seem to have been deceived by the MX website. Component/RGB video is analog. the cable shown there is OFC copper cable , not optical fibre cable as you seem to have understood it. optical fibre is not , as sirAlec said, used for component video. in fact , it cant , since the component video signal is an analog electrical signal

optical fibre is used for transmitting SPDIF audio. i am not aware of any use in video. the usual digital video outputs are DVI, HDMI etc which are all electical, and not optical

One part of my company also deals with security systesms.

So we do use OFC (as in Optical) cable plus ADC Codec+DAC codec to transmit Video signal to long distances.

But using it at home is absurd and funnily expensive. That too for a 5-10 meter range in your living room.
