Editing an MP3 to create a custom ringtone

I am looking at ways to cut short the intro music so that the mp3 ringtone begins from the first word of a song. Or, may be I would sometimes want to have the ringtone start from a particular point (be it a music piece or a word of a song). Is this possible? How do I go about it?

Simple, use audacity to edit the MP3. Its a simple software, download it and edit. I used it a lot at one time when I was crazy on trying new applications.
