So far 5.1 is good, better to be on the latest versions anyways

Guys,

I just bought an iPhone 4S 16 GB factory unlocked here in Ireland. To activate, I didnt connect it to iTunes but just put the sim in and connected to the wifi network. Now when I go to settings and usage, the total memory is shown to be 13.6 GB but available memory is only 12.4 GB. Where have the 1.2 GB's vanished. I have no applications, no data, no music, no nothing on my phone. I just activated it to check if it was factory unlocked. Any advice?

I also noticed that even with no sim inside and all the other radio's off, the phone is loosing charge at the rate of 20% per day. Isn't it too much considering its just sitting there idle? Its on iOS 5.0.1

I'm guessing that's the space taken up by the OS.

Welcome to the iPhone club. As the post above mentions, it is the space taken by the OS.

There seems to be an issue with the battery life with the IP4S. Counting from the experience with other iPhone users, I guess with the new OS update (the iOS 5.1) the battery life is a little bit better.

If I am not wrong, the OS partition is different.

Guys I face problem with my signal reception with 5.1, 5.0.1 was better. Any one facing this issue?

Not sure, if its due to the update. Mine seems to have improved :). However, I have not read anywhere that something was done to the antenna in this update.

Yes, I haven't charged my iPhone since last morning and have 45% battery left even now after normal use. Normally it'd have been in the 20% range by now.

I had faced the issue with 5.0.1. I'll check 5.1 and let you know.

It definitely is not a placebo effect. iOS 5.1 is really faster than earlier versions. The time taken to launch apps has drastically reduced and app switching is actually fast! :) I am also enjoying the better battery life!

As I'm writing this post, my IP4S is getting the iOS 5.1 update. I have been using the iP4S only since the last 5 days and I'm in love with it. I did not have this experience when I bought my first Android device (the first ever Samsung Galaxy). It was just another mobile phone. But the IP4S seems to be more than that.

Welcome to Apple. We all know exactly what you mean :)

I thought the 4S has the 5.1 Isn't it so?
Have to check my cell.

Additionally, the Vodafone 3G connexion in my part of Bombay is nothing to write home about.

The 4S has iOS 5.0 by default. 5.1 was released a couple of days back.
