That is part I don't agree with. No one in industry uses this a source.

First version of GE maps (in 2001) used that and it was horrendous. Since then there is a cottage industry of mapping companies and these companies are source for maps data. This data is aggregated and cleansed by Satguide / MMI et el. This is in addition to their in-house data teams.

Bought India map from MapMyIndia for my Garmin 205W purchased from USA. Maps were loaded automatically from SD card and worked without any trouble. Map is loaded with lots of POIs and amount of detail within city limits is surprising.

Within Kolkata, I have used the "search by house number" twice and both times it was accurate. Also used it a few times on long drives within West Bengal and national hwy / state hwy directions were accurate. However, going to lesser known destinations may pose challenge. It is possible to search with PIN code in case the destination name is not found but not all PIN codes are available.

I have also tried to use the Nokia OVI map on my Nokia 5230 but it is nowhere near the MMI maps in comparison. No complains except the price. It cost me more than the GPS!

According to MMI they have done exhaustive mapping of the entire country and employ 400 field staff for this.

At this point of time there are three sources - Navteq (from Garmin), MMI and SatGuide.

If you have a foreign sourced GPS then you get Navteq from garmin.com at $99.99, download to a SD card and then activate through mygarmin.com. MMI are about Rs.7000 for one year while SatGuide are under Rs.1500. Only Satguide are still to release the Garmin version / upgrade of their newest offering supposedly Oct-Nov 2011!

I bought MMI for about 7grand - this was about 1.5 years back though. It still works perfectly.

Can anyone help me pick a GPS device.
I have no experience with it.
I was looking at getting a garmin from US and get a map here.
Some suggest to buy here itself.
Do we get garmin here in chennai?
What would be the best option.
Budget is 7K

Hi, I am looking for a bit of current information here.

i have a Garmin 2455 LMT purchased in the US, and I want to use this in India, particularly, North India.

What are my map options?
- Satguide? (2000)
- MMI? (7000)
- Navteq from Garmin? (5500)

Obviously I would love to go for the cheapest option if they are not limiting.

Please advise.

Gramin Launched India specific devices, with lifetime free Navteq maps.

The cheapest one costs around 8.4K, go for it.

The details of retailers exists in their website, I saw one for chennai too.

Garmin India | Products | On The Road | nüvi® 40LM India.

Maybe the thread below should help. The device has got good reviews from jalsa777 and IMO should be a good & VFM buy. What's more, Garmin's offering free lifetime updates for the maps. You may have to stretch your budget a little , though. Cheers & Happy Navigating !

I bought a Garmin Nuvi with India maps loaded on it here in Delhi. But unlike the Middle East Map the Mapsource does not automatically take the India Map details. Can someone suggest what to do ? The India map backup was provided on a Micro SD card.

The GPS and Maps were purchased in Delhi from ASIM trading

Have you selected the map in Settings? Go to Tools --> Settings --> myMaps and select the India map. Deselect the ME map.

I have a Garmin nüvi 205, which I bought in US in 2009. I am not able to buy an India map from Garmin's website, ,as it always leads to me upgrading North America map.

I contacted SatGuide (SatNav Technologies). They have offered me an India map in a 2 GB micro SD card for 2990 Rs.

How are their maps? How much discount should I be asking?

EDIT: I also contacted Bangalore sales office of Garmin in Frazer Town. They also sell SD card. The lady wasn't sure of the price, so she said it could be around 3000 Rs. They also give an option of buyback if I don't like the product. The only catch is, I need to go all the way to their office to do the payment and buy the card. The advantage is, I can test the product right there (since I am going to buy 2 maps, one for a friend who has another Garmin device).

The latest Garmin Maps for India version is City Navigator India 2013.20 NT. Still not good as MapMyIndia (MMI). 2 years back I had compared MMI & SatGuide. MMI was far better. Not sure how latest MMI compares with latest Satguide.

I use a Garmin 200 and had SatNav maps installed. They gave mea free upgrade in the first year anthen they asked for Rs.1000/- for subsequent upgrades.

On my friend's suggestion I started using OpenStreet Maps that are free and being a developer's map keeps on getting upgraded very very frequently.

The latest upgrade is of 26th July. You can go to http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl and download the file for garmin (gmapsupp.img) and enjoy.

Very comprehensive map and free too. You can PM me if you have any issues.

Or go directly to - http://osm.pleiades.uni-wuppertal.de...fc15b81ab7a83/ and download the file - osm_generic_gmapsupp.zip. Unzip the file and install the file in the Garmin folder on your GPS's SD card, overwriting the earlier file of similar name.
