Whoa... Every Sunday my wife goes to her old place, visits her church, and comes back to me on a Monday morning. This time, we had 9-to-5 power cut announced here, and I went to join her instead, to keep cool. Before we left, I just said to turn off the AC, not only by the remote, but at the power socket, as the place may be empty for a day or three. How glad I am now to have pointed that out!

inside a house you could use wheat or gram flour.

Are you sure? I've seen demonstrations of flour dust in the air being
highly explosive!
If you can spend that extra select from Diaken or Hitachi
Else
Samsung or LG
Long time Indian is BlueStar

Apart from safety it is beneficial for our pockets too. Air cons especially the splits will turn their outdoor fans once in a while even if the indoor units are switched off. I have not checked this myself but as advised by installers. Then there is the trickle current consumption which is essentially electric energy being lost as heat energy. With the new age digital meters even this gets recorded.

Really, then it will be something similar to how oil well fires are put off.:D Just joking.
Guys based on Thad's inputs please ignore my suggestion of using wheat/Gram flour as an alternate fire extinguisher.
dear friends the hunt for an ideal a/c seems to never end for me.
i had finalised on 2 ton hitachi ace follow me and hitachi 1.5 ton quadricool window a/c.
the price quoted, including set up,is 47000 and 37000 respectively.there is an attractive zero % intrest loan. but the reviews on the net regarding after sales service is scaring me.

Dont know about after sales but I have also heard of Hitachi being very good over others.
I have slots in my bedrooms for a Window AC.
How do I figure out the tonnage of the A/C I need for my bedroom?
The flat is a 2BHK of size around 800 odd sq ft.
Will a 1 ton Window AC be good enough?
Also, are all window ACs of the same size - i.e. will the slot in my wall exactly fit the AC - if not how well will the installer install it so that there is no gap? How much is the installation charge typically?
surd_biker
thanks for the quick reply.
sorry that is a typo.it is indeed 27600 with stabilizer and installation.
Got a Whirlpool 1.5T Chrome edition
good enough, i think...

Pros & Cons of OG 1.5 ton window AXGA18 is that it comes with a 19,800 Btu compressor. Input power is 1870W. Air cutting noise is high. Are you confident regarding the seller?
Pros & cons of Hitachi Quadricool
TM. It is almost noiseless, power input is 1725W. Compressor is rated to 17000Btu and it is only 3 star rated.
As for the 2 ton machine go with the OG machine as long as you are certain that it is a new machine. Normally you will not get a duplicate in this tonnage but dud compressor is another story. Hence as long as you know the seller or if he is willing to accept payment after start up or some other assurance. If the air con is bad you will know on day one of full running so an years warranty is not necessary.
If you want warranty etc go for the Panasonic over Hitachi. You may or may not spend more upfront depending on the model yo pick from their 4 star rated 2 ton machines but the Panasonic is the Baap of all the Hitachi's(3 stars for follow me) of the world for the 2 ton range & above.
khoj- many thanks. please clear my doubts
does ogen a/c have star rating?
one sales guy mentioned that o gen has reciprocating compressor for 2ton and above.
is it true.if true, is it a disadvantage over rotary compressor.
regarding panasonic ,what exactly you meant by "Baap of all the Hitachi'",is it about the extra star rating?

The ones sold in India through proper channel YES

Correct

Not at all it is comparatively better than a rotary for this load range. Rotary is good up to 1.5 ton in terms of bearing the load while consuming less power but after that the reciprocatory does a better job.

That expression is just a way of saying that Panasonic air con is better than Hitachi in my opinion. The extra star rating is because of better design, better components, better compressor and better build quality.
@
Sheel
Congratulations Sheel. Do not think believe it Whirlpool puts out good products.
Heads Up ...
Daikin has crashed its a/c prices...
The 1.5 Ton split available for around 37k + installation..
That is great news.
It had to happen what with people ignoring them and quite a few of their dedicated dealers turning into multiple brand vendors especially going with Panasonic. I just hope that they do maintain the quality standards though.

You have to calculate the room size in sq ft and depending on the glass area and whether you are on the top floor etc.. you can calculate the tonnage. Typically for rooms around 100 sq ft i think upto 1 ton would be sufficient.
one of the links for lg india is
LG Electronics India: AC Tonnage Calculator
Another one
http://www.ehow.com/how_4965390_calc...c-tonnage.html
All windows ac are not the same size but yes you can get the sizes from the specs on the website and see if it fits.
Some dealers brands will offer free installation
