Laptop display cracked

Today morning when I turned on the laptop I was shocked to notice a big crack running from the top right hand side corner of the display. The top portion was completely black.

As far as I know the laptop was not dropped or banged, but it could have happened inadvertently by my daughter dropping something on it, sigh! Its a Toshiba Model Name: A305-S6857. I immediately contacted the Toshiba service here-TVS electronics, it was very near my house. No hope of warranty helping me here since it was clearly broken. I was quoted 18084 for the replacement.

It would be of great help if you guys can suggest me an alternative other than authorized service centers. The laptop is less than 6 months old, bought by my brother in Circuit City, US.

You could buy an external LCD monitor and connect it though VGA port. I picked up a 17' Samsung wide screen for about 7k about 6 months back. You will lose the mobility pf your laptop though.

Akeel many thanks

Hi Akeel,

Many thanks for the link you have sent, the cost difference is huge, the site quotes 6999 against the 18000 quoted by TVS to me. I will get in touch with the site and see if they can send it across to me.

The link you sent:
Buy Toshiba LCD Replacement Screen 15.4 in LCD Screen | Toshiba | Laptop LCD Screens | Computers & Accessories | GADGETS.IN at Gadgets.in - an Online Shopping Store! Electronic Gadgets & Gift items in India

Guys, can anyone vouch for the integrity of this site.

Got the display changed. It was 8000 for the panel including as the installation. It is a Samsung panel. the same panel was the OEM in my laptop, this I saw when the display was being changed. I was with the engineer when he was changing it since I did not know the place before, I was kind of suspicious to leave the laptop behind.

From the original quote of 18000 for the part alone from the Authorised service center to 8000 with a Laptop repair center, the difference is huge.

Wow, a minimum 10K difference between the two! Do not know what these ASC are thinking of!

And Anand, how was your experience with Gadgets.in? I guess you went ahead and got the panel from there.

Went and asked the laptop repair center for a price quote, he told me it will cost me 12000. I told him about the price on Gadgets.in(Thanks to Akeel), he told me that it would be international price, for which I told it is a Indian website. After that he came down to 8000. I told him it is 7000 on the site, he told 8000 is including installation. I did go through a couple of You Tube tutorials for changing the display and got familiarized with the process. But was not 100% confident.

So a couple hours of browsing & a with a few tips from friends from TBhp, helped me save about 10,000-12,000. Boy I am happy. Thanks.
