Hi,
I want to buy a new laptop for my parents. Currently they use a Compaq desktop computer which runs XP and is more than sufficient for their needs. However I want a more portable computer along with a wifi connection at home.
Question is first of all what should I do with the existing desktop computer? Is there a place to sell old computers? I live in Delhi.
I also have a printer and a speaker system for which I have no clue what to do! :Frustrati
In case you want to sell the same, you can check eBay and can post ads in one of the free classified services. Not sure how much would you get from selling it, as there isn't any market for used computers, especially the desktops.
I was in a similar situation few months back. I did not even try to sell the old computer, but decided to donate the same to our association for maintaining our layout activities.
Probably, you can explore at donating this to some school or someone who would really use it.
Bundle everything and sell for a reasonably low price on ebay. Since you are in Delhi, it's highly likely that you'll find somebody who can pick up the stuff from your place.
Depending on how old the PC is, it might fetch you few thousand rupees.
i agree with Murali, you can donate it to a needy student or school etc
it would better serve the purpose than getting couple of thousand rupees.
You can donate it or sell it. On the other hand if you intend to recycle it, check with any good software company's office, they would have a recycle policy. They would happily recycle it for you (at least the multinational companies do it). If any school or ashram is willing to take it, nothing better than that. It would be helpful for them too.
When upgraded, I gifted the old one to the poor daily wages data entry operator in our office.
Look at cyber cafes. They need fairly decent comps at dirt cheap prices to run their business.
I just keep on upgrading parts and my P-II desktop has still strongly kept pace with the dual-cores and Quad-cores of today.lol:
Why dispose of stuff that runs like butter? Thanks to my instincts for keeping all the old hardware that was replaced. I just use spare parts from those if something goes wrong.
Also check for Exchange offer, I know sometimes they offer peanuts for the old computer, But just give a try
You have two options.
1. The classified section - look at the link at top of this page.
2. The Official Team-BHP giveaway thread.
lol:
The best option is to donate as many have already suggested. The comp will fetch peanuts anyways.
Btw, Apple had an exchange offer, where they gave 6k for an old comp.
Sell the parts seperately on classifieds. You never know if someone might need an old part or two. Or donate it to someone. Or turn it into something useful yourself, like a file/web server, etc. The possibilities are endless.

Hi Aditya,
I too recently upgraded my desktop. My earlier desktop was a P-IV; when I tried to sell it, the max I was offered was 4K.
Then I happened to visit a NPO - Samagra (
Welcome to Samagra Ashram), working on stuttering amongst rural children. They are based in Herbertpur, Dehradun. They need a few computers to help their SLPs.
I've committed my dekstop to them, and will be sending it soon. If you want to donate yours, I can pick it and send it along with mine.
Regards
Nitin
Selling an old system will hardly fetch much. Donating it makes much better sense.
Alternatively, you can always use it as a back-up system.
