Things that would make a CD lose data faster would be heat / light / humidity(?) etc, and ofcourse - the QUALITY of the CD.

(Also if your data is unreadable - dont lose hope -- it might be readable on another better CD-Drive)

Exactly!! Those CDs from back in the day which were GOLD in color (costed 300-400bucks each at the time) were great quality. But within a matter of months they got totally replaced by the cheaper less quality versions.

This is what i do as well.
Also, i run defrag / scandisk etc every couple of months.
As i mentioned earlier - back up critical data in more than one place.

Chetan, perhaps you have misunderstood - my descriptions were saying that the 2.5" are used IN laptops and 3.5" mostly IN desktops.

You can use either size in an external enclosure for your laptop.

IMO 2TB is very Costly right now.
I would suggest to go for a 1TB internal Seagate/WD = 4k-4.5k
And Then Buy The transcend External Casing 1650
It comes with a fan !
The Best Cost effective Solution.

Else a 2TB= Somewhere around 11k Which is Not VFM at all.

I have following WD drives:-

2x 1.5TB WD Elements
2x 2TB My Book Essential Edition

There are all on USB. To be honest, I have been using these purely for secondary backup reasons but i prefer Elements since the silicon vibration dampners work pretty good and supress noise.

Simple, I am seriously running out space while converting my DVDs to MKV. Two 1TBs are full.

Elements (2TB) is not available in India.

Why dont you invest in a NAS or Raid5 on ur current rig ???

It sells for $170 in the US and has a usb host port where You can plug in your other usb drives.
Planning a purchase shortly either in the US (some colleagues are travelling) or here as it has an onsite warranty.

I do too but also run Raid5 on the system. I use new HDD's for external backup (2 copies) and everytime a hdd get retired it becomes a part of the RAID array. So far i have lost 1 external copy only.

For anything important i use Crucial hosting and host data online.

This is a purchase and ownership review of Buffalo 500GB External Hard disk Drive. Putting this here since I could not find any other suitable thread.

I wanted a external hard diak to store my ever increasing data and other multimedia files. Till now was storing it on my Lenove laptop and workstation. I wanted data mobility beacuse of my frequent trips outside country and data accessibility. I shortlisted Seagate and Buffalo. I chose Buffalo becase of the following reasons;
1. 3 Year onsite warranty. (Pick-up by blue dart express).
2. Extremely fast data transfer.
3. Cute.
4. Handy and portable.

Bought the hard disk from Premier computers, SP road, Bangalore. Purchase was easy, thanks to the upfront product research on the web.
The Hard disk is plug and play type. No drivers to be installed. Comes with data encryption. So every time you connect the disk, it asks for the password. 700MB of data requires only 30 seconds to be transferred. Overall a good product I would say.

I paid INR 5034/-. This is including 4% VAT.

Hey, you can get 1TB USB drives for that price...

Correct sir. Seagate 1TB is INR 4760/- + 4% VAT. But this requires external power. So I decided to go for 500GB. The store fellow told me that Seagate 1TB without power is not available.
