re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

Fellas,
please help me out with this situation. I am looking for a phone (>3" screen) primarily for calling, texting, chatting and surfing to kill time. I have a budget of 6-6.5k max.

Requirements:
> 3" screen
Calling/ texting
Surfing, emailing, GPS (primary uses apart from calling)
chatting (with fring etc)

After much research i have finalised on ther Wave 525 as it seems to perfectly match my demands. However, i need to know

1. if it supports Opera Mini? (heard the dolphin browser is not so good)
2. does it support GPS?
3. Can i send / recieve mails?

Plz note: I dont want to go for a low end Android with this small budget, since i would be getting the I9103 later. and i currently own a NOkia E71, but its small screen is turning me off and browsing is not a good experience.

hence, if not 525, please suggest another fone which would meet my criterias

Thanks a lot in advance,
Abhishek

I am using Wave 723 and my wife is using Wave 525. I find Dolphin browser much better than opera mini after two minor firmware updates. Yes you can send and receive mails. However 525 does not support GPS for that you can have look at 575 it has all the features of 525 + GPS.

Edit. I also have E71 and agree with you browsing on wave is much easier.

Thanks a lot fellwo brother. much appreciated. 575 it is then for me. I hope it is still available with online/ retailers.

edit: are you sure 525 dont have GPS? (reason being gsmarena and flipkart both enlists GPS as a feature in this)

Thanks,
Abhishek

Opps! My Mistake i wanted to write 3G but wrote GPS, but GPS is not as easy to use in (525/723) compared to E71 (In this department Nokia is ahead of Samsung). Yes it should be available with retailers and online i gifted my wife on our 1st wedding anniversary last month. Go for white one it looks way better than black.

re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

Hi Guys,
Need some advice from the group. This is for a friend of mine, who is looking for a 2nd cheap phone as she would be spending some time in a different state for few months and would be keeping her existing number too.

Her only requirement - a QWERTY phone.

Did a search on Letsbuy; found these three options

Viva Q3

Olive Messenger VG 800

Micromax Q1+

Since there is not much of a difference in price, could anyone give any feedback on either of these?

Look for one with biggest screen. Easy on eyes.

re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

Just the thread i was searching for last 30 mins or so, took some time to find it. Have a question for Android (and i believe iPhone as well) phone users.

I tried using this application (One of my friend has it on his iPhone) called "Cell Phone Tracker". You just enter the phone number and it tells the location of the phone (Which City, Location etc etc). Has someone tried it already and can i search for non Android phone numbers. I tried my wife's number and it located it correctly but failed when i gave my blackberry number and other friends numbers who i don't think are on Android.

Has someone used this and any feedback which app to use and what are the constraints (Like only iPhone and Andriod phones can be searched etc).

re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

Dont know about Android, but I remember reading an article some time back saying all iPhones continuously monitored their own positions, and even shared recent position data with Apple themselves.

I think that should be true in India as well, and thus you can track an iPhone via this method.

But I dont know whether this is true of Android, but I doubt that it is.

For a normal phone, all you can track real time is which tower a particular phone is communicating with at any point of time. If the phone is switching between multiple towers, you can reasonably decrease the target area. This can be done only if the cell phone operators allow you access. But its not that easy to track down a phone to a pin-point location of less than even a 10sq.m area.

re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

julupani - I own an android. You can always switch off phone location and / or GPRS. And additionally, you have option to switch off location services even with GPRS running.

The phone itself may cache locations you were in - my b/w LG 1100 (or something like that, and wife S520 - or may be, 550) had the features. You had to enable "cell info" display, and then, somewhere within the messaging menu, you could view the locations of all towers you had visited / passed through. Even the Nokia XM 5130 had this "feature". I used to extensively use this to determine when to get down from the upper berth while travelling on trains. This, till the operators decided to beam ads instead of actual locations. So, when I expected "ollur" while nearing Trichur, I would get "dial *#420* to get royally screwed". I stopped using this "cell info" thingie.

The caching ought to be true for all phones, only with the latest phones, the user cannot view it. I was unable to see the cache info in my Nokia X2.

But what was asked is about installing an application on the phone to trace its location.

There was a report on the net about some guy who lost a phone, and then went on to install some app remotely, after he lost it to the phone. (mentioned on the Android thread) He got the phone back, because the finder was silly enough (a) not to remove the SIM (b) kept the phone charged (c) did not flash a different ROM.

Edit:- the app is called "plan B".

The report is here:-

re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

This is the application i was talking about. Saw it on one of my friends iPhone and was interested in installing. Searched in the marketplace and then installed it. When saw it was not working with any phone decided to read the whole details about the app.

Found it to be fake, it does not do anything. Here is the text that i found in the app description.

In reality, this app always tracks your location and since your friends are likely to be next to you they’ll think that it works.

Here is the link

What a waste of time :(

re: The Mobile Phone Thread - Queries, decisions, discussions all here

Any help with a Turn-by-turn navigation or Directions-navigation app for Windows mobile?

It should be available on HTC Marketplace.

PS : Is there any way you can download any app from some place apart from Marketplace for HTC Windows Phone - HD7?

Excellent recommendation, Thanks a ton.

Installed in just now and it is quiet accurate. Although i am not sure if the phone gets stolen how would i find it as it goes to nearest 75Mts which is quiet a lot (An apartment complex may have 300 to 400 apartments and locating phone in one of them will be a challenge)

Nevertheless its invaluable as if you i forget my phone somewhere at least it will tell me approximately where it is and rest can be guessed.

Quite a few are available in the Marketplace. There is one called Turn by Turn, but quite expensive. It shows SGD 6.99 here.
