Recommended Firefox Addons

Hi,

Here the list of firefox addons which I would recommend. Please feel free to add to the list

1. Adblock Plus: Helps in blocking of ads. Moreover, you can add to the list of blocked contents. Link: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865

2. Tab Mix Plus: Customizes your firefox in a variety of ways. Mouse gestures, tab behaviours, sessions, menu editing, etc are supported. Link: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1122

3. IE Tab: Helps in rendering pages using IE engine as some webpages are designed keeping IE in mind. It works only in windows though. Link: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1419

4. FoxClocks: Displays various timezones in the bottom of the firefox. Link: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1117

5. Tab Preview: Helps you view the content of the tab without actually clicking on it. Link: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6132

6. Ctrl-Tab: Gives the display as the ALT-TAB of windows vista. Link: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5244

7: PDF Download: Helps you to download and save the PDF instead of directly opening it in the browser. Link: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/636

Tweaks to Firefox config:

Open a new tab and type "about:config". Click ok in the next window.
Look for the below values:
a) network.http.pipelining -> set it to true
b) network.http.pipelining.requests -> set it to some integer value like 20. This means that it would be firing 20 requests at once
c) Right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it as “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0″. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

All I get when I do this is a blank page. BTW, I'm typing this in the address bar of the new tab

Nice thread!

Here is my addition to existing list:
  1. Autopager (a must for any forum browser).
  2. BugMeNot (Hate those "register first" sites?)
  3. CoolIris (Excellent companion for google images)
  4. StumbleUpon (Discover really good sites)
  5. Xmarks (If you use firefox from multiple machines).
There are few others installed in my Firefox, but not everyone would be interested in them.

Flashblock

Next to adblock-plus, that is my favourite. Stops all those wretched flash animations on pages from playing unless you want them to.

Stop Autoplay

Helps too. Unfortunately I am yet to find a way to completely disable all sound on all websites that I do not choose to listen to.

Configuration Mania

Helps to tweak stuff without going through about:config wondering what everything means!

Forecast Fox

For the weather

British English Dictionary

Because I can't spell

I have a few others too, but those are my favourites, apart from one new favourite I've only had for a couple of days so far: DownloadHelper which is for saving flash videos (eg Youtube). Seems very good.

TabMixPlus is not compatable with later versions; some functionality has been included anyway.

Nice thread :-) I use several of the addons. Some additional nice ones are:

* SwitchProxy (does not yet work with FF3.5)
* Forecastfox (weather forecastst from accuweather.com in status bar etc)
* All-in-one Sidebar - Sidebar to show all addons, history, bookmarks, downloads etc etc : very useful
* Image Zoom - zoom in/out images, and various possibilities

Cheers,

Thad just install a script blocker, nothing will ever play/load without your ok. Super way to secure the system too

Raj... thanks; I tried that a while back. Security-wise, it seems to be the obvious thing to do, and is recommended by many.

I'm afraid that I found it so frustrating, given that so very many sites do use scripts, that I gave up on it

There's a thing called Greesemonkey too, but it seems to be for those who can program

I just add the sites I use often to safe list so that way it gets easier. No need to give an ok each time you visit them then.

Anyone knows an add on for US proxy servers? I like to listen to some US radio stations and watch hulu.com but they dont stream outside US.

Could you post a step by step process on how to configure this for TBHP? It works only for the new posts page and not for an thread that I open .

I tried autopager, and could not get on with it at all.

What I'd most like to do with forums like this is have a next-page/previous-page key combination

Going off to find out what cooliris is!

A few minutes later... Oh! Neat! Thanks

Will try this one, never searched for such add-on. Hence hadn't installed flash player and have used IE for viewing any flash content.

Personally, don't like to overdo with plug-ins or add-ons. adblock-plus is default & only one add-on for me.

The more addons the more cumbersome, but I do enjoy experimenting with new ones; one can always discard them!

One that I miss (no update for current FF versions) is digger --- which facilitates going up the pathname tree of the URL. Quite often a link takes one to a page deep within a site, but one wants to look around.
