GPS Navigation for Mobile Phones

slightly OT: I am confused here guys, we are repeatedly asked to switch off all electronic devices while take off and landing. is switching on the gps mid flight safe? does it or rather CAN it interfere with an aircraft's electronic systems?

You can check out the galaxy 5/3. Galaxy 3 is around 12k. 5 has smaller screen and is about 9k. They run on Andoird. So comes with google maps.

You might want to install the brut mod of google maps, which will enable you to save the map locally.

SatGuide is now covering 810 cities and also providing India map for the Garmin GPS devices including the nuvi PNDs.

Yes, It would interfere. It would be hunting for signals from transmission towers and satellites.

Anyways, why would you need to check GPS on a flight ?
As it is you are not navigating anywhere or controlling anything !!

Just bought Nokia E5. Early experiments with GPS are excellent. It catches satellite within minutes. City maps are good, though I wont depend on this for turn-by-turn navigation unless I am completely lost.

I am contemplating buying a Gramin-Asus A10 phone (primary consideration being its GPS capabilities). Any feedback regarding this is appreciated.

not sure if anybody noticed, microsoft has released navigation for windows mobile phones with bing. seems to have work well from what I can see in reviews.

It does not interfere with Aircraft navigation since GPS is a "passive" device.
Following Airlines allow it on board once aircraft is on cruising altitude.

Airlines which APPROVE/DISPROVE GPS use in Flight

However as a precaution:

1. Do check that all "active" RF like bluetooth is off.
2. Send an email to customer care to airline asking if GPS is allowed. And do carry printout of written confirmation.

This is really working great in US. I tried this today in my HD2 and got a pleasant surprise. It has voice guided route navigation and it automatically reroutes if you go in other way. cool.

I used my GPS in flight and I could see where we were flying, specially looking at the river/other geograhical structures from the window and then in the GPS. quite fun actually.

my airline said electronic devices could be turned on except cellphones once at cruising altitude. even laptops with wifi are allowed (there was inflight internet for 10$ I think.

I have been using Map my india maps on my Iphone 3GS.
this is how the set up looks like,who needs a separate navigation device.
the Belkin Dock,acts as a handsfree,and sound out put for voice navigation and calls is from speakers through AUX.
this is how it looks.
