Not sure of the HTPC on DIY front. I guess the best finished product would the MAC mini. You can get for 34K. I guess that is real VFM with an amazing form factor.

Apple (India) - Mac mini - The most affordable, energy-efficient Mac.

You may quickly run through my thread on HTPC here .Though it is almost two years old, I am basically using the same hardware with some changes here and there such as OS: Windows 7 Ultimate, PCIE ATI Radeon HD 4550 Video card instead of the integrated video, and the same old Yuan PG 600 Falcon 2 TV tuner/FM card. I am yet to add a BD writer capable of playing Bluray discs to make it a full fledged HTPC. ( For the time being I am using a Sony PS3 Slim for bluray discs )

The 7.1 audio+ video capable HDMI port of the video card feeds the HDMI port of the LG LCD TV. ( My old Philips 5.1 AV receiver does not have HDMI input.) The optical output of the motherboard feeds digital audio to my Philips AV Reciever. These are basically the connections.
