Only if you have an international plan...which is kinda pricey.

I use either Vonage or Reliance for all my calls.

skype? It has sms facility. I can send an international SMS without a long distance plan but the cost is little steep (25c a pop).

Yeah Skype is probably the best option, I've used it on a number of occasions and its pretty good. What i also did was register on way2sms with my indian mobile connection and sent sms to my friends and family logged in from the US, works like a charm.. and its completely free. :-)

Try services from 160by2.com. Using this site, you can send SMS to any mobile in India. I havent tried to send any message from US to India, however have tried sending messages while being in India, to mobiles in India and it works fine. On the cost part, it is absolute 0 .

i use Indyarocks.com. the only thing is you have to register an Indian phone and then send it online. while locally it goes from indian phone to indian phone, person in US can send it by logging into that account. and its free

For free option - try the Free SMS, Send Free SMS, Send Free SMS to india, Free email alerts, email2SMS, SMS Alerts,Bill Reminders, EMI Reminders, Loan Reminders, TV Shows Reminders, Future SMS, Mobile Bill Reminders

For a cheaper option try SmartVoiP

I use Smartvoip extensively to make calls to India too. Very good too. And gives you free calls for US.

try Bulk SMS | Premium Bulk SMS Gateway | Bulk SMS Campaign | Send Bulk SMS at 6 Paisa in India which is i think parent company of 160by2

I've used it in past, they offer reliable services but little expensive than other cheap players.

Why dont you use the yahoo services? If you have a yahoo mailbox, open it and just press 't'. Then send the sms to whichever indian mobile number you want.

If you can find the sms gateway for the Indian service provider, you can use your email account to send texts. Its FREE FREE FREE (obviously). For AT&T, I successfully tried with gmail, yahoo mail and my university email. Just send an email with recipient as <number>@txt.att.net.

I found an old list of gateways for few Indian networks here: Email to SMS Gateways, Complete List | mutube

Try your luck finding others

PS: Its 100% reliable as your are technically sending an sms, although from an email account. The receiver can even send a reply text, which you would receive as an reply email.
