Normally on my reliance GSM, I see "E" in the notification bar while browsing from mobile. I have my Mobile 99 (2.5G/month) GPRS data plan, and max speed I can get is around 80kbps (Tested with Speedtest),
Today, I found that the pages are opening a little too fast, and it was showing "H" in the notification bar.
I ran speedtest, and my download speed was 1.3 Mbit/s

Now, I do not have any 3G plan on my mobile.
Moreover, if 3G is used, I would see 3G in notification bar.
According to the manual, H means HSPDA, which is actually 3.5G.

I do not remember reading about HSPDA in India? So I am wondering if reliance GSM is testing HSPDA. Well its good while it lasts, unless they decide to bill me!

most of the service providers in India had opted for 3.5G though it would be sold as 3G. not sure on why you are getting 3G in your mobile.

Bsnl gives me 3.5G notification on my e72 all the time and has been giving so since the time 3g has been available.
Similarly i have seen only 3g notification on my friends e72 on docomo.

T-mobile in the States offers a 3G HSPA service that is marketed at 4G.

Same with Airtel in Chennai - most of the areas I frequent give me 3.5G, only a few places say 3G.

Yeah, I have it & its actually HSPA+ service which is also knows as 3.5G.

@ tsk1979 MTNL is already using HSPA. In my W760i it is showing H from day one after I subscribed to 3G.

At times I had got 2.1MB/Sec

Cheers!

The same for me, I have been using 3G/H since almost over a year, I had called within the first week of the 3G launch of MTNL Mumbai and since then I have it and love it.
I think the sign is mobile specific, as on my Samsung Star 3G, there is a 3G sign, on my SE U100i, there is a H sign, on my SE X10i, I have always seen a 3G sign, but its new and haven't used it much.
My plan is some 250 Rs/month for 200 mb, suffices my net usage, I rarely use more than that.

@ TSK, I called someone in Gurgaon a couple of days back and got a voice notification saying that "The reliance subscriber I have called, is on 3G now". May be that gives what is going on with you?

I kind of figured out whats the problem.
Yesterday when I called customer care whether 3G is activated on my account or not, they told me their systems are down.
At that time HSPDA was working on my phone.
When their systems came back up, I started getting GPRS only.
Intermittently when there is a system error, 3G gets enabled on my handset. Funny is the way Reliance GSM works.

BSNL also alternates between 3G and 3.5G in BLR from day 1. Some handset like iPhone, both are shown as 3G, while Android and Nokia sets have separate notifications. So at the end of the day the network decides which technology they want to incorporate (3 or 3.5 G).

I hear that the Reliance L1 typre of plans may be history soon. EVDO is coming in big time.

I normally gets this.

MTNL mumbai has finally launched 3G across mumbai. Earlier it was limited so select areas.

The marketing guys can create new terms everyday. LTE itself was not 4G and now HSPA+ is considered as 4G.
