And one has to appreciate that? Perhaps you don't know about Xerox and others doing practical work for the last 40 years then. Not 'head in the clouds'! Different matter that MS has more money - doesn't mean they have done something one can appreciate as innovative. And I am not an MS-basher!!!

1. x86 processor architecture always - didn't ever need a different compiler
2. What you think is 'different combination' is actually the 'bus' concept used in hardware, with drivers written by others (nothing by MS barring the first few standard devices)
3. Hardware add-ons via USB PnP? That was never MS ingenuity
As @sbala said, recompiling / porting to a different processor is not innovation. No one discredits for what MS has made (it has it's own respect), but crediting MS blindly!?!?!?

OS X on non-Apple x86? Look around. But why? To save some money at the expense of elegant hardware and better service?

App Store came *before*, not after hacking and 'jail-breaking'. Conscious decision by Apple - prevent App induced equipment functionality failure by testing & removing it before User gets the App. Wrong decision? IMHO, no, they were right - in the interest of 99.9999% of Users. The balance were naughty 'hackers' and 'freedom from constraints' seekers.

App Store? Can you otherwise get legal software, without installation hassles, in just as much as time it takes to download, and virus free, and free periodic unattended updates (without asking stupid questions to the user)? And, we should complain about something? Even MS is trying to go in that direction - late in the game.

Who are industry experts and how do they know better than people here?

Sorry, I am a little skeptical about industry experts these days since most of them sound like journalists than techies. Also, I tend to disagree with them often.:)

OT: But I will be really interested in the history having directly worked on Project Natal i.e Kinect and still working quite closely on Xbox next gen.

Operative word is "Still". I wonder what happened to Xerox PARC, Bell Labs or even HP labs !!

I don't know, that is why I asked who the industry experts you had in mind. For example, I know DerAlte and acurafan are themselves industry experts.

Acurafan posted his views and i posted mine. That's it. To me, Surface RT is not there yet as Windows 8 RT is in very early stages. As a consumer, why would I buy an item which has half amount of restrictions and limitations. Surface RT is just form early adopters.

I would say Nexus 7. Let me explain why!

I was in same situation as you. Both very appealing products. I list few advantage of Nexus 7 below and the reason i went for it. Day to day use, i love Nexus 7.

- Better Screen Resolution, more ppi and love the display. Very useful for media.
- Faster Processor. Easily supports JB's faster frame rates. No hiccups.
- Has proper stereo speakers. Tab 2 has worse speakers imo.
- Has Gyroscope.
- Better Battery life.
- Gets first OS updates. Great XDA Community support.
- I am heavy cloud user so i don't miss memory slot.
- DLNA, my TV has one.
- Has NFC. I have NFC Tags and have a NFC Enabled phone. Very useful to transfer data on the fly. You can read about my NFC tags review elsewhere in the forum.
- Quality of tablet. Love the way it feels in my hands and that i can hold it w/o worrying of dropping it.
- I have 32gb with wifi and hspa+. Unlocked so can use any data plan anywhere in world.
- I would never use rear camera on a tablet to click pictures. Would look so dorky.
- Finally the VFM of Nexus. At $300 for 32gb HSPA+ tablet, its hard to go wrong.

I do miss expandable storage sometimes but cloud has me covered there. Apart from that i don't miss Tab 2 much.

Just got a Nexus 7 this week and am absolutely loving it. Stock Android without the addons like Touchwiz is awesome.

My Galaxy S3 has some useful features as part of Touchwiz like battery % on task bar, smart stay and other small stuff but Stock JB 4.2.1 just feels so simple and easy.

Basically I wanted a tablet to be online from home rather than drain out the phone or opening the laptop for checking e-mails and browsing.

Now it is very clear that Nexus 7 is far better than Tab 2 and we can use its front cam by any of good camera app., it can record 720p video also. It is availabe 16GB version for USD199 in USA, its real VFM if we can source from there.

In that case, it is a moot point. Case closed.

Can you make calls using the Nexus 7. Not an important feature but I suppose it can come in handy sometimes.

And how is the OTG support on it? Have you tried connecting a usb hub to it and attach multiple devices?
I have seen the Tab2 support multiple devices and large hard disks via OTG.

You cannot make calls from Nexus 7. You can connect hard disks to Nexus 7 - at least that is what I have read online. Not sure though.
