USB temperature monitor for PS3!!!

I've lost my PS3 (60GB) due to Yellow Light of Death (YLOD), which is caused by overheating of the unit.

Unofficial Yellow Light of Death [YLOD]... | PlayStation® Community Forums

Have returned the system to sony. The salesman says i could get between 40-60% off on a new PS3 slim.

So to prevent such a thing happening in the future. I was wondering if there are any USB driven temperature gauges available for the PS3. Or could i somehow, connect my laptop to the PS3 (via USB) to monitor the temperature while it's being used.

Re: USB temperature monitor for PS3!!!

Easiest would be to get one of those outside temperature displays meant for cars (something like this), with it's own display and the temperature sensor on a wire. Put the sensor inside the PS3 unit.

Otherwise, you have to get a unit (like this one) that allows temperature to be read off over USB. Much costlier.

Re: USB temperature monitor for PS3!!!

Right now, i'm using this software called "Speedfan" for my comp, which keeps me updated on the temp (core temp),voltage and fan speed in realtime.

So a USB device which uses the PS3's own sensors to display the temp would be more accurate i feel. Something similar to a car's OBD unit that displays the ECU's readings.

The new one won't have the problem in the first place.

Re: USB temperature monitor for PS3!!!

There are already vids on youtube, showing YLOD affected PS3 slims.

So i'd rather not take a chance with the new unit.

In case of PC, those parameters are readable over a standard interface (BIOS) - the software does not directly read sensors. Are those available over a standard interface in PS3?

Re: USB temperature monitor for PS3!!!

The YLOD problem doesn't exist on PS3 Slim. That is basically the reason why Sony redesigned it. Take it easy!

Yeah, that's what i meant. Like an OBD scanner that uses the car's ECU to get the readings.

I'm sure Sony must have given the PS3 some sort of interface which has the ability to monitor various parameters. It's just that, without a display, it's impossible for the user to know the operating condition of the system.

My PS3 gave me no warnings what so ever, one fine day it just switched off and went into limp mode, while i was playing.

That's what everyone thought. But just after a year, people are beginning to experience YLOD in their slims as well.

Re: USB temperature monitor for PS3!!!

I've seen many vids of slims getting YLOD. I'd rather be safe than sorry.......2nd time around.

Anyway, that's not the point here. The discussion is about getting a software or external unit that will show me the operating temp within the system and let me know if the unit is getting too hot, for whatever reason that might due to.
