Used cars: Maruti 800 or Esteem?

I plan to buy 96/97 model Maruti 800 / Esteem for running around 700km/Month. So, which one is good for FE and low Maintenance costs? Plz tell me also what mileage can I expect from both in highway running conditions? Thanks in advance.

Please mention your budget & also other requirements like whether you need a boot &\or do you need more space at rear seat.

Also Why have you listed only these cars?

If you are looking for 96/97 models - always better to go for a maruti 800. I had a 97 Esteem , which was an nice car but the milage it was giving is horrible.

If you can shell out 10-15K more than your budget og 96/97 Esteem, you will get an 800 in much better shape.

Vinfriend,

One rule that applies well in the used car is buy a used car which you can maintain well rather than what you can afford to buy. If you have a budget of 2 L it is better to go in for a used Alto than a used Esteem for the same price because of better FE and cheaper maintenance costs. Having said that one would buy in a bigger car if that person wants to carry more people /luggage in his car and/or travel comfortably. Also safety wise bigger car is more safer than the smaller one.

Given the choice of your cars, it is better to opt for M 800 which is low in maintenence and FE is also good. But if you put more money say 20~25K, you will get an alto itself which is better than M800/Esteem. Think about this.

I had an 9 yr old zen which used to give me 10-11km/l . I sold it recently.
It would be better if you buy a Used Zen instead of a M800 IMO.

The M800 and the esteem belong to 2 separate class of cars. One is a small car and another a mid segment. Compare apples to apples.

I would suggest the esteem as the maintanence and running costs are not significantly higher compared to the 800. Plus you get a bigger and more comfy car (bigger boot, peppy engine, safer to an extent than the 800) etc.

Do let us know more details such why not the zen and why only these 2 cars. We can help better.
