Why don't service centers return replaced spare parts in the interest of transparency?

VW and Honda service center always used to place all the replaced spares as well as the packaging/boxes of the installed new parts (like filters) in the boot while delivering the car during my Jetta and Brio ownership even for regular maintenance service. Even half empty bottles of windscreen wash liquid used to be handed over to us. Even for specific repairs as well, like replaceing the ABS sensors, brake pads and discs etc they return the old parts to us. We could ask them to take it out for disposal else, we can take it home and dispose it ourselves.
