Insurance cover for road trips - Innovative?

Uptil now domestic travel insurance offered by Insurers was limited to only flights and rails trips but now insurance is being thought about for the road trips too. Call this innovative or another marketing gimmick.

With more and more people opting for road trips - annual or weekend getaways, Insurers want to offer a product for the road trip insurance to cover any calamities befalling during the trip. Although this would not appeal for the personal vehicle owners who would anyways be already covered by the car insurance, it will surely benefit those who would want to hire a cab/taxi/tourist vehicles for their outdoor trips.

More details in the link.

What doe BHPians think of such product? Will this boost domestic travel insurance or end up as a marketing gimmick?

Re: Insurance cover for road trips - Innovative?

It might be a marketing gimmick, but for travelers its something that would be helpful. Most car owners are insured but when we travel on rented taxis for long distance one is never sure if the car is insured leaving you and family at the mercy of your private insurance. The trip insurance would be helpful in cases personal insurance does not cover.

I see this also as a good move in terms of fleet owners or other operators. They could limit their liability in case of an accident and compulsorily add insurance amount to the ticket being sold. This in my opinion would benefit everyone.

Re: Insurance cover for road trips - Innovative?

Domestic Travel Insurance was never a success and doubt this one too. Coverages would be the key. Add-ons have really not gained momentum in our country.

Most of them would be have a Liability cover. Death due to accident is covered. Even if its not covered and a person dies, State Government pays to deceased family. Though it will take a generation to get the money from our Government.

Personally, people who think their net worth is much more than 50,000 (usually covered under liability) those should get a Personal Accident (PA) policy of higher sum insured. PA policy is valid worldwide. This with a mix of Life Insurance Policies is enough to see your family through couple of years.
