NCB or no claim bonus is an incentive for not making a claim. Since you are first time purchaser, you do not have any NCB at purchase. Every year when you renew, if you did not have any claim in the previous year, NCB discount would automatically be applied at the time of renewal. If you have a claim during the previous year it will not apply. That's all.

There are some insurance companies which provide NCB protection (which is different from actual NCB), this usually protects your NCB discount in case of just one claim during the period. This is useful for folks who already have a higher NCB % on their policy. For a first time user, it may not be of big help.
