HM-Mitsubishi has finally launched the BS 4 version of its pajero. The car is available at dealerships now. Am not aware of the prices, but the engine's power and torque is now reduced marginally in order to compensate for the ever tightening emission norms.

Power is about 108 hp and torque from its IDI 2835 cc turbo diesel motor is about 260 nm.

Sid, Pajero's power was 118hp previously right ? Is there a reduction of 10 hp because of the norms? Thats bad !!

That is sad news. I expected them to plonk in a new engine or re tune the old one to improve the power, FE and emission figures. 108 BHP on the already underpowered vehicle feels too low.

Hope that mitsubishi correct the pricing of the Pajero too.
just as the power has gone down, if the price follows suit it would make a much more attractive package

Pajero is already losing out to competition due to being already high priced and a less powered engine and now they have reduced it even more.

not good on mitshubishi's part, rather than taking the competion head on, they are just letting it go.

Come on ! Discontinue it already. They trying to create another Ambassador legacy here?

Rather focus on more promising products such as the Outlander, new Lancer etc.

Sid good to have the update, but Pajero with the 8% drop in power needs to similary drop prices by 18%. It was just about ok in terms of power and pickup and this drop will not make it worth picking up new, If someone wants a pajero at all cost would recommend he buy the SXF from the last 2 years rather than go for a new one. I just wonder why they could have not obtained a more powerful engine for the pajero even if in the same form factor. It will I think be the last nail - presuming that the buyer looks at the spec sheet and takes a test drive.

10bhp is a major loss for Pajero, whose competitors have much more modern and powerful engines. The Pajero used shorter gearing to compensate for lack of power, which gave it good driveability but robbed it of FE. Are there any other changes?

What about the BSIII version? Is it still available with older specs?

Here's something to really think about. Want to know the reason HM reported to the BIFR (linky)? It's right here on this very thread.

It's been ONE YEAR since the BS-IV norms were applied in various Indian metros. While newer manufacturers like Tata & Mahindra have developed some truly competitive products in the last decade, HM has primarily relied on imported / outsourced technology. You'd think their job would be easy, but NO! They take ONE FULL YEAR after BS-IV was mandatory to launch an emissions-compliant version of their 20 lakh rupee product. And it's not like the BSIV norms were imposed overnight. The industry had sufficient time for preps. Heck, some manufacturers released BSIV compliant products even before April 2010 (@ HM, it's called proactiveness BTW).

I guess they'll take another year or two to offer an immobiliser in the Pajero. Despite a 2 lakh rupee Maruti 800 having the same, and being fully aware that the Paj is a thief-magnet.

Hindustan Motors should rebrand themselves to Hibernation Motors

The Pajero's biggest Achilles heel was its weak old school diesel engine. To make matters worse, its lost more power now.

How hard is it to plonk the engine from the Montero and detune it? I realize its from a higher segment but don't the 520d and 320d use the same engine?

Mitsubishi couldn't have picked anyone worse to enter the Market. As GTO rightly pointed out, HM is nothing but a bunch of lazy guys least interested in 'Cars', just going to work for monthly salary. Its like some govt office this thing. Do they have to pass every damn decision like a parliamentary process? Seriously, its time they break the deal and start over.

Mitsubishi Montero too got a power upgrade recently, before that it was slower than even the Ford Endeavour. How does a 0-100kph in close to 15s for a 40+lakh rupee vehicle sound to you?

Sounds bad, to most, which is why it doesn't sell in the numbers it can/should. Of course, this is apart from the other drawbacks it has.

But guys remember that because the Pajero 2.8 used to win the Paris Dakar back in the day, there are die hard Pajero fans who will continue to find reasons to buy this overpriced and underpowered relic even if the power dropped to 75 bhp.

Unless you spend most of your days tracking wildlife in a jungle, I can't think of any valid reason why some one would spend 20 Lakhs to buy an multicolored SUV with 115 bhp that can barely keep up with a Scorpio or Safari and give 7 to 8 kmph doing so, seats 4 people and is sold and serviced by a company that is sinking into a hole that it cannot crawl out of...

Pajero has it's merits and I would buy a good used one for under 15 Lakhs but now way would I spend 20+ Lakhs to buy this relic.

108hp for that 2 ton behemoth!! Why the heck anyone buys that? And that too at 20L+!!

Really, so why do people continue to buy it? Just coz it used to win Dakar's some decades ago?
