The Gujarat government has been flogging all these stories about Ford, Hyundai and now Maruti setting up shop in Gujarat. These have been merely publicity stunts by the government. For Maruti, shifting production to GUjarat would not merely be acquiring land and beginning production but a major shift with vendors parks etc. With 600 acres at Rohtak, I doubt they'll be ready to shift out of Haryana just yet. Just my understanding of the situation

no . MSIL is not setting up a Plant in gujarat but they are setting up a BIG warehouse some where around kandla port . the warehouse is being build to carer to south / west & export market more efficiently . moreover kandla being sea port , they will reduce their dependency on Chennai for exports as well as save some costs on transportation as kandla is near to gurgaon .

That makes alot of sense. Why didn't they do it so far?

Why go all the way to Chennai? They could export even from the likes of Mundra or Pipavav which are uber efficient.

Apparently MSIL has applied to the Guj Govt for setting up a plant in/near Sanand and the file is still under process.

Setting-up a production plant (as per the article its a "facility", not necessarily a production unit) in Gujarat does not mean that MSIL will shift out of Haryana. Go through the article it clearly states that this could be to reduce dependency on a single facility,

The move is seen as an attempt by Maruti to reduce its dependence on Haryana and diversify operations across the country.

Spoke to a maruti source. It seems that RC Bhargava is meeting with Modi today and they will talk about a possible plant. So maybe I was wrong. Let's see what I hear. Will let you all know

Nothing gets officialdom until its real: touchy-feely. Just to give you 2 striking examples:
1. Tata buys land in Singur, WB - the plant never came up.
2. VW had shortlisted Alabama in 2008 to set up a $1billion plant. Ultimately it went to Tennessee to set it up.

For all those in doubts about Maruti's plans and about Guj Govt flogging all these stories. The below article might clear the air. From the local sources we have found out that Maruti is not "shifting" from Haryana but instead opening an extra facility here.

The automobile major’s new manufacturing plant may come up in Sanand

AHMEDABAD The country’s largest car maker-Maruti Suzuki India’s Managing Director Shinzo Nakanishi will meet Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday to discuss and possibly finalise a deal to set up its 7th manufacturing plant in the state, a senior government official said.
“Yes, Maruti Suzuki MD is scheduled to meet the Chief Minister tomorrow,” Gujarat Principal Secretary (Industries & Mines) Maheshwar Sahu said when asked if any such meeting was planned to discuss the agreement.
If a deal to set up the plant in Gujarat is finalised in the meeting, then it will be the first major investment by Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) outside Haryana, where it has been present since its inception in 1983.
Sahu, however, declined to share details such as whether the final agreement will be signed during the meeting, the location of the proposed facility and likely incentives to be offered.
Official sources close to the development said MSI has zeroed in on a location near Sanand out of three offerings —Sanand, Halol and Dholera.
“Besides Nakanishi, the top level MSI delegation will also include its Chairman R C Bhargava and some other senior officials,” a source said. When contacted, a MSI spokesperson said: “We are not in a position to comment in this matter.” Earlier this month, senior MSI executives had met state officials here and held three rounds of talks so far.
MSI’s manufacturing has so far been concentrated in Haryana with two production facilities in Gurgaon and Manesar, besides an upcoming research centre in Rohtak. PTI

By the body language of Suzuki Executives after their meet with CM Modi.. it seems they are pretty excited. In fact they made it clear they will decide the location in few months and also said they aren't looking at any other states.

Maruti Suzuki offers to set up 10-lakh cars per annum plant in Gujarat, top brass praises Chief Minister Modi’s positive approach

Gandhinagar, Tuesday: Passenger car manufacturer Maruti Suzuki Limited top brass here today expressed intent to set up its another plant in Gujarat on a 500-acre plot with a capacity to produce 10-lakh cars per annum with provisions to produce 20-lakh cars per annum in the second phase depending on the global demands.

MSL chairman R.C. Bhargav and managing director Shinzo Nakanishi during their discussion with Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi said that Gujarat is their first preference for the company's expansion projects, as the state's long coastline offered excellent car export facility.

Both expressed satisfaction with the outcome of today's talk. They praised the Gujarat Government's and Mr. Modi's positive approach.

They hoped the location of the site and other formalities for the phase-1 of the project could be completed in three months and it can be ready in five years. It can create direct employment potential for 1.50-lakh people. They showed willingness to set up skill development centre in the car manufacturing sector and vendors' park in the state, too.

Mr Bhargav said that ancillary industry, infrastructure and other employment generation activities are sure to grow around its new car manufacturing plant in Gujarat, as has been the case with its existing factory in Haryana.

Others present during the discussion were Chief Minister's Principal Secretary K. Kailashnathan, Principal Industries Secretary M. Sahu and other senior officers.

It makes a lot of sense for Maruti to setup a plat in Gujarat. If they finally decide to setup near Sanand, it could be because of these reasons

- Gujarat is almost in the middle of India - shipments to both South and North of the nation would be easier.
- Nice port connectivity - Maruti already exports from Mundra port.
- Good overall business climate - very little industrial disturbance. Very proactive government - almost dictatorial CM (in this case, in a good way!)
- Hopefully we will get cheaper Marutis in Ahmedabad
