The Beetle

Although I was tempted to call this car the 'New Beetle', Volkswagen names this latest generation car as the 'Beetle', so thats what i'll call it.
  • It is longer and wider than the previous generation, but shorter. This gives it a more grounded stance and it looks more purposeful now in my opinion.
  • The front end gets a similar treatment as with the other modern VWs.
  • This car shares its platform with the VW Jetta (A5 platform)
  • Its got a bigger and more usable boot now. (310 L vs 209 L on the older model)
  • It gets 2 engine options, a 1.2L TSI (Power: 105 hp, 0-100 km/h: 10.9s) and a 1.4L TSI (Power: 160 hp, 0-100 km/h: 8.3s)

Volkswagen XL1
  • The XL1 is the third iteration of the Volkswagen 1-litre car
  • It is a diesel plug-in hybrid and is branded as a "Super Efficient Vehicle" (SEV)
  • It can achieve a fuel economy of 111km/l and CO2 emissions of 24 g/km.
  • It uses a two-cylinder turbo-diesel displacing 800 cc and produces 47 hp of power and 121 Nm of torque.
  • Power is transmitted via a 7-speed DSG transmission.
  • The electric motor produces 27 hp of power and 100 Nm of torque.
  • The XL1 can travel up to 35 km on electric power alone.
  • Curb weight: 795 kg and drag coefficient: 0.186 (a similar drag coefficient to the General Motors EV1 electric car).
  • Just 23.2% of the car (184 kg) is made out of either steel or iron; the drivetrain weighs 227 kg.
  • Performance: Top speed - 158 km/h (governed), 0–100 km/h: 11.9 s.
  • A new system for the manufacturing of the Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) parts has been developed to increase weight saving. It is called Resin Transfer Moulding (RTM) process.

On a side note, Volkswagen have taken their Think Blue concept to the extremes, they had placed these 'Think Blue' dust-bins all over the AutoExpo:

Re: Volkswagen (Beetle, XL1 & others) @ Auto Expo 2012

Beetle has improved a lot. Have driven it for a while (US, Rental) the main problem i faced was, the car literally shivers when a Pickup / Semi truck passes by. The new Beetle looks like its center of gravity is far low than the old one. this might fix that problem. another is the boot size. seems like it is fixed too. one good thing about it is the view from inside. you can almost see under your car you can see everything.. both the front view and rear view are very good. happy that it is still the same..

Re: Volkswagen (Beetle, XL1 & others) @ Auto Expo 2012

Its a small thing but Showcasing a RHD beetle on their stand shows how serious a company is for India.

Historically VW 'Volkswagen' ironically has so much swayed away from the main ethics that the company was build on 'People's Car'.

The cheapest of the lot with Skoda parts being 5lacs, is actually not actually cheap for the package.

As far as Touareg is concerned, The previous generation meaner looking one was way better than this.

Re: Volkswagen (Beetle, XL1 & others) @ Auto Expo 2012

The proportions of the Beetle now looks more in line with the original car. If only the engine/drivetrain layout was also carried over.

This being a niche category vehicle, not expected to sell in huge numbers, appealing to only those interested in a modern beetle, who might not be so price sensitive, they might have as well done it, rather than leverage the cost benefits of platform sharing with an existing front-drive platform.

Re: Volkswagen (Beetle, XL1 & others) @ Auto Expo 2012

The Beetle looks pretty good (especially the sports variant) and has nice interiors. Loved both the alloy designs for it. Runner ups are the Toureg and Phaeton. I wonder what kind of ride comfort will the 20 inchers offer on the Indian roads.

When did the beetle become a front engined vehicle? I thought it was always a rear mounted engine and the front twas the boot???

Re: Volkswagen (Beetle, XL1 & others) @ Auto Expo 2012

Sure the Beetle looks good. But, IMHO its still a sporty cute car, meant for the fairer sex. I wouldnt dream of driving this.

On the other hand, i loved the new Phaeton. Looks very elegant. The back somehow reminds me of the Passat and Superb. Very similar styling.

What about the Jetta Tsi? Any news?
