Why no focus bulbs for front number plates ?

While getting the number plates for my safari one wierd thought stuck my mind and just wanted to know if this thought has crossed anyone else's mind or not.

Why is it that the rear number plates have focus lights and the front ones don't? The front number plates are not visible at night in a moving vehicle when the head lights are ON however they are visible on the rear with the provision of lights.

Is there any logic behind it?

Its simple logic- If the headlights are on blaring at you how will the tiny number plate light be any effective?

Don't take this in the wrong way but did we really need a thread for this?

Perhaps you would have heard of glowing number plates.I know someone who can make front plates with a custom lighting setup. If we can gather enough buyers, he can mass produce it. :P

If there is a need for someone to capture the number (rash driving, hit & Run etc), most probably you will be looking at the back side of the vehicle 95% of the times after the act is commited. lol

Though i am not sure if that was considered by the officials or the automobile makers

MV rules give importance to the rear number-plate. That's also why you may go scot-free with a bad /missing front plate, but a good rear number plate.

The focus lights / number plate lights being only on the rear plates would be an extension of this.

Re: Why no focus bulbs for front number plates ?

Nowadays with the ever increasing number of toll booths, security posts (private and public) and other spots where it is necessary to note down your number BEFORE you enter, it might be a good idea.

But it all goes to dust, when at night the head lamps are blinding your eyes already. Does anyone switch off their lamps at toll booths at night? I don't.

Hence I don't see it as being a necessity (read MANDATORY). For the rear it IS.

to my knowledge some states in the USA don't even mandate front number plates. At least we are a step ahead.

As mentioned in the thread earlier, blinding lights in the front and need to note the number at rear during hit and runs sound logical!

Glaring headlights make it ineffective. Period.

In fact, it will be illegal to have such fixtures after-market too.
