Detroit Of India?

Which city in your opinion is the best for setting up a new car plant and why?

Recently we've heard of VW's search for a new plant site for their India ops and they are not able to make up their mind yet.

Let's help them out shall we?

It has to be Pune !!

1> ARAI is present in Pune.

2> Tata, Mahindra are in Pune (equivalent to GM and Ford, in the US)

Next in line comes kolkata, but the HM unit in Kolkata is sick..

Going by the history of instability, I can tell you what should NOT be an option on anyones list - Maharashtra.

Mahindra is in Nashik. But we have various component manufacturers here, as also two wheeler giant Bajaj, and Kinetic. We have upcoming manufacturer Kanda (with their ambitious plans) and DCIL too.

Thats a whole lot - and the TN govts also have been very welcoming to them.

Another candidate could be Delhi-NCR - it has the biggest Fish - MUL, and also Honda.
Not to mention, one of the largest metro markets. Plus a huge market in Punjab for luxury cars.

TamilNadu has many highly regarded OEM manufacturers like TVS , TI, Ennore Foundaries, Geethanjali, Rane, Talbros, Simpsons, Pricol, Lucas, Delphi, Roots, MRF, L. G. Brothers, India Pistons, Gabriel etc.

All of them are in Chennai, Coimbatore or Hosur which makes them easily accesible.
Manufacturers like TVS, Eicher, Enfield, Ashok Leyland, Ford, Hyundai, HM Mitsubishi are already here.

In addition Chennai has abundance of skilled people with good work ethics.

The government is also too supportive. What else do u need?

For sure chennai is Detroit of India.

Chennai does have a good track record, not to mention its a Port city, which neither NCR nor Pune can boast of.

But the downside could be high labor costs and high real-estate costs.

VW is said to be connsidering setting up in Vizag in AP for exactly this reason. I think this is a slightly risky move because there is no history of automobile manufacture in those parts. Also, I'm not sure how well its connected with highways.

Maharashtra got a bad name mostly because of Bombay. Both Mahindra and PAL/Fiat faced the brunt of labour problems. Not to mention flooding! Its now rumoured that FIAT is selling off its plant to developers and moving to Ranjangaon now.

Otherwise Pune, Nashik, Baramati, Aurangabad are all doing pretty well.

Greater noida and Gurgoan is not cheaper anymore..........if you compare it with other metros. specially if you talk about commercial and industrial land.

Don't know about Nashik, Baramati or Aurangabad but in Pune

You have no infrastructure at all.
No regular electricity supply.
No regular water supply.
Horrible roads.
Even more horrible traffic conditions.
No public transport which is worthy of mentioning.
Extreme weather conditions Summer almost 40+ deg and winter almost < 5 deg.

Other than that its a great city. (sarcasm)
